Darts are often used in accuracy games. Perhaps their most popular use is on dart boards. Lawn darts and blowgun darts are also popular. While darts can be constructed out of regular household material quite easily, it is important to remember safety. Without properly observing your surroundings before throwing or shooting a dart, you could injure or kill someone. But darts can be fun, and that is what they are usually designed for, though other darts, such as poisonous ones, can be used for hunting.

1.Thread a sewing needle. Leave 1 inch of thread exiting the needle's eye on each side.

2.Tie a knot so the thread is secure to the needle. Repeat as many times as you can until you can't put any more thread through the hole, about 15 times.

3.Take the eraser off the pencil. Put the needle through the top of the eraser until the end of the threads are just underneath the top of the eraser.

4.Cut the end off a pencil at the base of the eraser. Cut four notches 1/4 inch deep in the end of the pencil to form a cross. It should look like a Phillips-head screwdriver can fit into it.

5.Cut four small diamond-shaped pieces that are 1 inch in diameter each. Apply glue to the inside of the four notches at the end of the pencil.

6.Place a cardboard diamond into each notch. These are your guiding fins. Sharpen the end of the pencil.

Darts is a game based on the ability to throw a game piece at a board, which is segmented to show different point values. The classic version of the game, "01," has some general rules to which all players must adhere. It is this version of darts that is the basis for all variations of dart play, so it's best to understand these rules before attempting a different type of dart game.

Setup
The dart board must be 5 feet 8 inches from the floor to the center of the bullseye. If you're using steel-tipped darts, the throw line needs to be 7 feet 9.25 inches away from the face of the board. For soft-tipped darts, the line needs to be 8 feet from the dart board face.

Choosing Play Order
To determine play order, one person from each team throws one dart at the bullseye. The team whose player gets his dart closest to the bullseye goes first.

It may happen that the first person to throw his dart gets a bullseye. In this case, the second player may try to "win" the bullseye in one of two ways. The first way is to remove the first player's dart and get a bullseye, essentially creating a tie. The first and second players then throw again in reverse order to break the tie. The second way to win the bullseye is simply to hit a bullseye without removing the first player's dart---this is a little more difficult because the flights on the back of the first dart can interfere with the second player's throw.

Scoring
In "01," the objective is to reduce the beginning total down to 0. Play usually starts with 501 points, but you can create a longer game by adding points in intervals of 100. Players calculate points earned for subtraction based on where the tip of the dart enters the board.

Each player throws up to three darts per turn. Players subtract the total number of points they gain with the three throws from their running game total (e.g., 501, 601). Only darts that stay in the board count (re-throws aren't allowed), and if a player steps over the throw line during their turn, none of the throws for that turn count.

When a player takes his turn, the scorekeeper has to record the points and the player needs to remove his darts before the next player can throw.

"Going Out"
Exiting the dart game is "going out." To do this, a player has to exactly reach 0. The dart that a player throws for this also has to be a double (i.e., it has to land in the outside narrow scoring band or the center small bullseye). Players may use any combination of their three darts to achieve this. For example, if a player has 31 points left, she can use one dart to score a single 1 and then throw a dart on the double 15.

The game of darts has a history that dates back to medieval England, when it tied to archery training. The modern rules of darts originated around the beginning of the 20th century. The regulations for equipment and guidelines for play accommodate many dart games, including two widely played versions, Cricket and 01.

Equipment Rules
The darts must weigh no more than 55 grams. The dartboard hangs five feet, eight inches, measured from the floor to the bullseye’s center point. Backboards also need to be centered. The game’s throw-line is about three feet wide and, according to A-1 Darts, its placement is exactly seven feet 9 -1/4 inches from the face of the board when using a steel-tipped darts. If the darts are soft-tipped, place the line eight feet from the face.

Pregame Rules
A typical game of darts takes place between two players or two teams. Each player gets nine warm-up throws before the game begins. After that, one member of each team takes a throw; the player who hits closest to the bullseye takes the first turn. But if the first dart thrown hits the bullseye, the second player has the option to remove that dart and try his own shot. If the second player’s shot also hits bullseye, the throw is repeated until one player’s dart achieves the highest score.

Player Rules
Each player throws three darts per turn, called an “inning.” The player must stand with both feet behind the throw line, but he may lean his body over the line. A foot on or over the throw line is called as foul, and the throw is not scored. If the player’s dart bounces off the board, the throw is not scored. The dart must remain in the board for at least five seconds to count. However, a player may remove a dart before it falls, provided all the other players have thrown.

Cricket Rules
Cricket darts is based on a game model that has individuals or teams vying for the highest score. Each player or team strives to “own” a certain number – numbers 15 to 20 and the bullseye – by landing it three times. Once one competitor owns a number, that team owns the number until the opposing team also hits it three times. After that, no player may score off that number. The game ends in victory for the player or team that closes all the innings first and gains the most points.

01 Rules
The variant game of “01” (pronounced “oh-one”) can be played by individuals, but more often is the choice of dart teams. The object of this game is to end with the lowest score. Teams begin with a set number ending in “01” – 301, for example. The board number of each dart’s hit is subtracted from that number, and the first team to get to zero wins. As Cyber/Darts notes, the challenge in an 01 game is bringing the score exactly to zero, “and the dart that brings the score down to zero must be a double.” For example, a team with two points remaining must achieve that by hitting 1 twice.

People who dabble in darts don't realize that cricket is a strategy game. Learn the rules, then develop your technique.

1.Play with two people or four people on two teams.

2.Write the numbers 20 down to 15 vertically on each side of the scoreboard. Put a letter "B" (for "bull's-eye") below the 15, and below that write "points."

3.Throw three darts at a time, alternating players. Remove the darts after your turn.

4.Count any darts that land in the bull's-eye or numbers 15 through 20. Don't award points for hits on the numbers 1 through 14.

5.Mark a slash on the scoreboard next to a number when you hit one. The second time you hit, make a second slash to form an X. The third time, circle the X.

6.Count the number twice if a dart lands in the doubles ring (the narrow one around the outside), and count the number three times if a dart lands in the triples ring (the smaller one between the doubles ring and the bull's-eye).

7.Close out a number by hitting it three times. Once an X is circled, that number is closed.

8.Hit a number that you've already closed but your opponent still has open, and you get points: If you closed 15 and then hit it again, you get 15 points, which you write in the points area. If you closed the bull's-eye and then hit it again, you score 50 points.

9.Total up all of the points when one player closes out all of his numbers plus the B. The person or team with the most points wins.

10.Keep playing if you close all of your numbers before your opponent but are behind in total points. You can win only if you accumulate more points than your opponent before he closes out all of his numbers.

Pubs throughout the United Kingdom and some bars in North America feature dart boards for patrons to enjoy. Darts is a game played by tossing small pointed sticks, or darts, at a dartboard. The dartboard usually has segments with a red bull's eye circle in the center of the board. Darts uses a unique scoring system that may not be completely obvious at first glance; the numbers are arranged in a seemingly arbitrary fashion. However, dartboards use this numbering system for a specific purpose.

Darts Origins

The exact beginnings of darts is unknown, but according to the website the Online Guide to Traditional Games, some dart authorities believe that darts is connected to the game Puff and Dart. Puff and Dart was first referenced in two journals in 1819 and was described as a game involving blowing a dart through a tube to try and reach a red center. The game is thought to have evolved into a French fairground game in the early 20th century. The segmented dart board was developed there as a way to make it seem easy to win a prize. Others note the existence of a board thought to predate 1900 known as the Grimsby board, featuring a semi-random numbering system pointing toward a game of skill instead of randomized tossing.

Scoring System Creation

The scoring system of the modern standard dartboard, known as the London dartboard, has two possible origins. Pub Quiz Help notes that Brian Gamlin created the numbering sequence in 1896. Gamlin was a Lancaster carpenter according to the Online Guide to Traditional Games. However, dart historians have trouble finding information about Gamlin and his supposed invention. The other potential inventor was Thomas William Buckle. Buckle lived in Yorkshire as a domino maker and is believed to have developed the numbering system in 1913.

Number Arrangement

On a standard dartboard, the numbers for scoring seem to be in a random position. The numbers in clockwise order from the top are: 20, 1, 18, 4, 13, 6, 10, 15, 2, 17, 3, 19, 7, 16, 8, 11, 14, 9, 12 and 5. At first glance, the numbering system looks rather random. However, it is believed that the numbers were arranged in this way to prevent any way of cheating to reach a maximum score. The numbers alternate from high to low to decrease the chance of winning the game out of luck and emphasize the need for skill.

Scoring

In addition to the randomized numbers, standard dartboards also feature two different rings that alter the scoring and focus on dart player skill. The outer ring of the dartboard doubles the points for that section. For example, a dart landing in the outer ring in the 20 section would be worth 40 points. The smaller inner ring triples the score. Games can be played either by trying to achieve the highest score combination with three darts or by starting with a certain score and subtracting points to try and reach zero.

Board Variations

In the United Kingdom, dartboard variations exist that alter the numerical sequence and scoring a bit. One board, known as the Yorkshire or Kent Doubles board, lacks the triple score ring in standard boards. The Lincoln board is similar to the Yorkshire board, but is black and white rather than featuring colors. The Lancashire board matches the Lincoln board, but is smaller and usually made of wood. There are also boards that use only multiples of five as the scoring, known as the London Fives and Wide Fives boards. The London Fives board features thinner double and triple rings, while the Wide Fives board has wider rings.

Darts is a game that requires excellent hand-eye coordination, strategy and experience. A circular board is hung on the wall and darts are flung at the board, which is made of sisal fiber. The sisal fibers are made from agave and can handle the impact of many sharp-tipped darts without sustaining much damage. Before becoming an experienced dart board player, one should learn and adhere to the game's board specifications.

Dart Board Height

The dart board must be hung on a wall with the bull's-eye measuring exactly 5 feet 8 inches from the floor. Dart boards come in a variety of sizes, from the largest to suit the inexperienced to smaller targets that challenge the veteran. To conform to regulations, though, the important thing is the height of the board, not the size of the board. All dart boards will be broken up into 20 equal pie slices within two rings surrounding a tiny circle. The first ring runs along the circumference of the pie; the second ring is a smaller circle just inside of it. And the last ring should be a tiny circle where the tip of each pie slice meets. This is the bull's-eye, and hitting it earns the greatest number of points.

Throwing Line

According to regulations (and irrespective of the size of the board), throwers must stand a uniform distance from the board. The standard distance is measured by doing a relatively simple calculation. Measure the distance from the face of the board to the wall. This is typically 1/2 of an inch. Then add 7 feet and 9 and 1/4 inches. Use the new sum, which would be 7 feet and 9 and 3/4 inches, based on the example above, and measure out this distance from the wall beneath the dartboard to the throwing line. Measurements must be exact to conform to dart-board regulations. If the face of the board to the wall measures 2 inches, for example, then you must measure 7 feet and 11 and 1/4 inches from the wall to the throwing line. You have to ensure the same throwing distance, 7 feet and 9 and 1/4 inches, no matter the thickness of the board.

Additional Dart Board Tips

Because the dart board is a comfortable distance away from the thrower, seeing the bull's-eye and surrounding numbered points can sometimes be difficult. Place the dart board in a well-lit area. In addition, because dart throwers often miss the board altogether, install a protective backing for the surrounding wall to absorb the impact of botched throws.

The standard throwing distance for throwing soft tip darts is eight feet, although this can vary depending on the rules provided by the board manufacturer. The board itself should be mounted so the center is five feet eight inches from the ground. Each player gets three darts to use in the game, and there should never be more than three darts on the board at one time. electronic boards can have multiple possible games programmed into them, but general scoring rules can also apply: 50 points for the bullseye, 25 for the ring surrounding it and all other points depending on the number marked on each section. In official tournament play, the score recorded by the board's computer is final. Soft tip darts are made with soft, rounded plastic points instead of the sharp metal ones on most darts. These darts are made to be slightly safer and work with special dart boards, particularly electronic ones. The boards they're used for are usually made with a plastic face with several perforated holes made to fit the dart tips. Some rules and regulations with these types of darts are the same as with others, but there are some rules specifically for playing with soft tip darts and their boards.

Safety and Weight Rules
Any dart board that comes with soft tip darts should only be used with those or other soft tip darts. This is especially true of electronic dart boards, as any other darts can damage the electronic components within the board. The recommended maximum weight for these darts is 18 g. Many dart boards meant for soft tips can actually hold darts up to 25 g without being damaged, but the darts themselves will often break the tips at that weight. The exact weight restrictions and recommendations can vary and are set by the dart board manufacturers. Even though soft tip darts have safer tips, they should still never be thrown at anything other than the dart board itself.

Darts is a throwing game in which two or more people take turns throwing a set of three darts at a circular board. There are many different dart games such as cricket, 501 darts and Shanghai. Although the rules are different for each game, players should develop a basic throwing strategy to become a better player and avoid injuries.

Stance
Line up with the dart throwing line on the floor. Draw an imaginary line from the bulls-eye to the throwing line and place your front foot at that point. It may be helpful to associate that point with a scuff mark or stain on the floor. Stand either sideways with your arm out or face the board directly. Facing the board is generally more comfortable but facing sideways helps to eliminate moving your arm from side to side. Try both positions to see which is more comfortable.

Grip
Everyone holds a dart differently, so do what feels comfortable. Don't hold the dart too loosely or too tightly; your grip should be relaxed but firm. Use at least three fingers to hold the dart. Keep your unused fingers open rather than curled into your palm. Check that the tip is pointing slightly upward before you throw.

Aiming
Envision a line from your dominant eye through the dart and to the target. If you are not sure which eye is dominant, throw two or four darts with each eye closed. The eye you have trouble keeping closed during the throw is your dominant eye. Keep your focus on the target, not the dart.

Follow Through
When the dart leaves your hand, keep your arm in the same position as when the dart left. This is known as following through. Many players let their arm fall down before the dart is completely gone. This will affect where the dart lands. Keep your arm in a straight, slightly upward position for a moment after the dart is gone.

The game of darts is usually played for fun in most pubs, pool halls and bars. The object of the game is to throw a dart and try to hit the center of a target, or bull's-eye. Many people play competitively in the World Dart Federation. Whether you play professionally or for fun, the rules are basically the same.

The Dart board

A1Darts states that the dart board needs to be hung exactly 5 feet 8 inches from the floor to the center of the bull's-eye. The actual throw line should be marked and be exactly 7 feet 9 1/4 inches from the face of the board. The throw line should be perpendicular and centered to the board.

Scoring

When throwing the darts, any arrow that hits the center or bull's-eye is worth 50 points. The small ring around the bullseye is worth 25 points. The inner ring (between the bullseye and the outer ring) are worth triple the amount shown in each section. The outer ring is worth double the amount shown in each section. Each player starts with 501, 701 or 1001 points and as the player scores, each throw is subtracted from the starting score. The first player to reach zero wins the game.

Additional Rules

Each player throws three darts at a time. When a dart is thrown and it falls and hits the floor it can not be re-thrown. The dart is out of play until the next round. When calculating the score, a player must reach zero exactly, and he also must reach zero by throwing doubles. For example, a player that has a score of 50 and throws two darts that hit the 20 space must hit the outer ring of 5 (5 doubled is 10) with their last dart to reach 50 and win the game.
