From the era of the gladiator to that of the avid dart player, the need for entertainment has catalyzed some fairly interesting inventions. Although much less morbid than publicized killing spectacles, the game of darts is one such invention that has a rich and interesting history.

The theory behind the origin of darts is slightly controversial because of gaps in the written record of history. Most historians and dart experts agree, however, that the game was the result of some kind of military exercise among British soldiers. Before the time of the British Empire, or in between conflicts, soldiers often grew restless and sought sources of entertainment. In their glorious militant machismo, they decided to challenge each other to a contest of sorts in the area of spear throwing. The soldiers would shorten their spears or arrows and throw them at the bottom of an empty wine barrel. Eventually, the barrel evolved into the cross section of a tree, the rings of which worked ideally for scorekeeping purposes. Bored British soldiers would retire from their daily duties, fashion targets from wood or barrel, and head to the pubs to challenge their comrades. Often times, pub owners would give discounts to those who would bring targets or help maintain them, as the boards were often difficult to keep up when they were made of wood.

At one point, the game of darts was under legal fire, as English law during the time of the game's inception prohibited "games of chance," or gambling. When this was taken to the courts, the particular pub owner who was being prosecuted showcased his skill by hitting the same number three times in a row, proving that the game of darts is indeed a game of precision and concentration. Many fans are unaware of this act of valor in the preservation of the wonderful game of darts.

The establishment and maintenance of the British Empire had no adverse effect on the game that was developing at that time. In fact, it contributed to the game's popularity. In true sporting fashion, the Brits shared their game with conquered peoples, effectively spreading it throughout the massive empire that they created. To give a little context as to the sheer breadth of this empire, it was said that the sun could never set on it. Regarding the origins of the game in America, the pilgrims that travelled on the Mayflower were avid players themselves. After they settled, the game flourished in America just as it did in England. The widespread popularity of this game eventually led to the establishment of official rules, regulations, and even tournaments.

The official rules dictate that one should stand anywhere from 7 to 8 feet from the board, behind the "throwing line," before throwing any darts. The most typical dartboard that people are familiar with today, although hardcore traditionalists may still prefer wine barrels, is referred to as the "clock" board because of it's design. Although the rules of play are also subject to slight variation, most people agree on the general format: two teams of players alternate turns, throwing three darts per team in an attempt to rack up the most points. These rules can be very hazily defined in situations where the players may be intoxicated, which actually allows for many creative developments within the sport.

Darts can be taken lightly as a game or seriously as a sport. Regardless of the demographic, as the game allows for participants of any physical fitness level, learning the history of darts and how the game evolved can add substance to the experience of "throwing a few" at the bar.

Of the two professional organizations, the British Darts Organisation (BDO), founded 1973, is the older. Its tournaments are often shown on the BBC in the UK and on SBS6 in the Netherlands. The BDO is a member of the World Darts Federation (WDF) (founded 1976), along with organizations in some 60 other countries worldwide. The BDO originally organised a number of the more prestigious British tournaments with a few notable exceptions such as the News of the World Championship and the national events run under the auspices of the National Darts Association of Great Britain. However, many sponsors were lost and British TV coverage became much reduced by the early nineties.

In 1992 a breakaway organisation was formed, initially known as the World Darts Council (WDC) but shortly after known as the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). The PDC tournaments have a considerable following, although the PDC World Championship attracts lower TV viewing figures than that of the BDO due to the BDO World Championship being free to view on the BBC.

The PDC tournaments often have higher prize money and feature the leading player in the history of the game, 16-time World Champion Phil Taylor. The highly successful BDO player Raymond van Barneveld switched to the PDC and won the PDC World Championship at his first attempt in 2007

The dartboard may have its origins in the cross-section of a tree. An old name for a dartboard is "butt"; the word comes from the French word but, meaning "target". In particular, the Yorkshire and Manchester Log End boards differ from the standard board in that they have no treble, only double and bullseye, the Manchester board being of a smaller diameter, with a playing area of only 25 cm across with double and bull areas measuring just 4mm. The London Fives board is another variation. This has only 12 equal segments numbered 20, 5, 15, 10, 20, 5, 15, 10, 20, 5, 15, 10 with the doubles and triples being a quarter of an inch wide.

There is a speculation that the game originated among soldiers throwing short arrows at the bottom of the cask or at the bottom of trunks of trees. As the wood dried, cracks would develop, creating "sections". Soon, regional standards emerged and many woodworkers supplemented bar tabs by fabricating dart boards for the local pubs.

The standard numbering plan with a 20 on top was created in 1896 by Lancashire carpenter Brian Gamlin.However, a great many other configurations have been used throughout the years and in different geographical locations. Gamlin's layout was devised to penalise inaccuracy. Although this applies to most of the board, the left-hand side (near the 14 section) is preferred by beginners, for its concentration of larger numbers. Mathematically, removing the rotational symmetry by placing the "20" at the top, there are 19!, or 121,645,100,408,832,000 possible dartboards. Many different layouts would penalise a player more than the current setup; however, the current setup actually does the job rather efficiently. There have been several mathematical papers published that consider the "optimal" dartboard.

Quality dartboards are made of sisal fibres; less expensive boards are sometimes made of cork or coiled paper. However, several types of sisal fibre are used in dartboards today, originating from East Africa, Brazil, or China. The widespread belief that some dartboards are constructed using pig bristles, camel hair, or horse hair, is incorrect. Apparently no such boards have ever been produced commercially.

A regulation board is 17 34 inches (451 mm)in diameter and is divided into 20 radial sections. Each section is separated with metal wire or a thin band of sheet metal. The best dartboards have the thinnest wire, so that the darts have less chance of hitting a wire and bouncing out. The numbers indicating the various scoring sections of the board are also normally made of wire, especially on tournament-quality boards. The wire ring on which the numbers are welded can be turned to facilitate even wear of the board. Boards of lesser quality often have the numbers printed directly on the board.

Recently, some companies have produced electronic dartboards. These dartboards have electronic scoring computers that are preprogrammed with a wide variety of game types. The board is made of plastic facings with small holes. The holes slant out, allowing the plastic-tipped darts to stick inside. When a dart strikes the board, the section makes contact with a metal plate, telling the computer where the player has thrown.

Before the First World War, pubs in the United Kingdom had dartboards made from solid blocks of wood, usually elm.They had to be soaked overnight to heal the holes made by the darts, and it was a messy business for the publican, although darts was a popular game. This changed when a company called Nodor, whose primary business was making modelling clay (which has no odour, hence the name Nodor), started producing clay dartboards in 1923. The clay dartboards never caught on, and Nodor switched to making the traditional elm dartboards that were popular at the time.Their model of dartboard was not a great success until someone came up with the idea of using the century plant to make a dartboard. Small bundles of sisal fibres of the same length were bundled together. The bundles were then compressed into a disk and bound with a metal ring. It was an instant success, as the darts did little or no damage to the board—they just parted the fibres when they entered the board; this type of board was more durable and required little maintenance.

Darts

To unlock Darts, you will have to complete ‘Crystal Maze’ mission. Darts can be played at Trevor’s favorite bar in GTA V; Yellow Jack In, Route 66, Grand Senora Desert.

The dart board will be available at the very back of the bar and can be started by pressing ‘right’ on your D-pad.

Rules and Regulations

Darts should be aimed at the different numbers on the dart board in order to minimize the score from 301 to 0. Refer to in-game controls to know the controls of your preferred system. Only once in a round, you’d be able to steady your aim which lasts for a few seconds.

The outer-most ring has the double value, the ring next to it has the triple value, the middle ring has 25 points value, and a solid 50 points for hitting the Bull’s eye.

Your last dart should either be on the Bull’s eye or touch the middle circle. Not doing so will count towards your defeat and elimination from the game. You must get your score to zero before your opponent to win the game.

Teams from around the globe are in St. John's this week to compete in the World Cup of Darts.

Two members of the Canadian men's team are from St. Mary's Bay.

Bill St. Croix said playing darts is a way of life in his home community.

"Everywhere you go, somebody's got a dart board in their shed or garage. When we were both brought up, our families played darts," he said.

Troy Hanlon, the other Newfoundlander on the team, said his father taught him how to play.

"Dad always had a dart board in the house, so he'd always just pick up a dart and throw a few darts," Hanlon said.

Both players are ecstatic to be playing for the national team.

"I was on stage yesterday and I looked down and saw my little girl Katie looking up at me, and she had tears welling up in her eyes and she was proud," St. Croix said.

"And my father and mother and my brother, everybody was there watching and every hair on my body was stood on end," he added.

Hanlon said it doesn't compare to anything he's experienced before.

"Right now, it's just the greatest feeling I've ever had playing darts because we're representing Canada and Newfoundland at the same time, in our own province," he said.

The team blew a 5-2 lead to the Netherlands on Wednesday afternoon and found themselves tied 6-6, with nine games needed to win the match.

"Darts is 90 per cent mental, 10 per cent skill. You've got to have a good head on your shoulders," Hanlon said.

Canada pulled through to win the match 9-6.

The competition continues until Saturday, when the final games will be played and medal presentations will take place.

The goal is to create a consistent repeatable throw, and once you have established your foot position and your lower body is perfectly still, it is time to launch your dart. The only part of your body that should move when you throw is your arm. Throwing the dart is the same general motion as throwing a paper airplane. Your upper arm should be almost parallel to the floor with your forearm and wrist at a right angle. Next you draw back and with a forward motion, like gliding an airplane, follow through with your arm and wrist releasing the dart winding up in a finishing position pointing at the dartboard.

At first you will focus on the mechanics of the throw but eventually you should be concentrating on the target and letting the motion take care of itself. Have you ever taken a wad of paper and thrown it from a distance into a wastebasket? Most people have and when you do are you thinking of how your arm is moving and how far back you are bringing it and with how much force you are throwing it? Of course not, you do it by feel because the mechanics are inherent. You have thrown things all of your life. This will be the same when throwing darts after a few hundred throws – you won’t have to think about the throw; just concentrate on the target.

There are a variety of grips one can use to hold a dart and all vary according to each individual. If you watch accomplished dart players you will see some very unusual ways of holding the dart. Most people, when they pick up a dart, position their hands to form a very natural and comfortable grip. The most common way to hold a dart is to position your thumb underneath your fore finger with your middle finger holding the dart towards the front of the barrel or resting on the point. The pencil grip is also very popular and is naturally comfortable. Choosing a grip is a subjective decision and usually what feels most comfortable for you will work the best.
