Canadian marine battery supplier Corvus Energy is proud to announce that it has been selected by Damen Shipyards to provide its next-generation lithium-ion capacitor (LiC) energy storage system (ESS), a groundbreaking energy storage system for cruise ships, for the four new battery-hybrid ferries for BC Ferries, according to foreign media.
Corvus Energy, the leading supplier of batteries for hybrid and zero-emission vessels, is ideal for applications where you need to move large amounts of energy multiple times per day, efficiently and at low cost. The company is suitable for both all-electric and hybrid installations. The Corvus Orca Energy became an enormous success when launched and is now on more than 140 vessels worldwide.
Corvus' Orca lithium-ion capacitor ESS has the ability to operate in hybrid or all-electric mode, high-performance specifications including fast charging and patented technology that exceeds industry safety standards, making it ideal for short-haul ferry projects.
In 2019, the company announced the launch of its next-generation battery energy storage system: Corvus Blue Whale, a groundbreaking energy storage system for Cruise ships, Ro-Pax and Ro-Ro. This system is ideal for applications that require low charge/discharge rates and high energy requirements, such as ocean-going vessels such as cruise ships, ro-ro ships, and container freighters.
By using high-energy batteries and a space-saving modular design, the new battery energy storage system has reduced its volume by 50% and its weight by 30%. The energy storage system uses quick connectors, which is simple and fast, easy to debug, and reduces installation costs.
At the same time, the design of the new energy storage system uses passive air-cooling technology and Corvus' patented single-cell insulation technology to meet industry safety standards.
Corvus' ship battery orders have also grown rapidly following the heats up of the electric ship market. In August 2019, Corvus Energy received orders for lithium-ion battery storage systems from 13 cruise ships of German cruise company AIDA Cruises. In the same month, Corvus also obtained the Manufacturing Survey Arrangement (MSA) certification from the Norwegian ship classification organization DNVGL.
Besides, Corvus has also reached an agreement with Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI). The two parties will jointly develop and produce new lithium battery energy storage systems based on the new lithium capacitor technology developed by KHI for use in electric ship applications. The product is expected to be available in 2020.
Since 2019, the international marine lithium battery market has rapidly heated up, and the demand for marine lithium batteries has grown significantly. Lithium-ion capacitor (LiC)-based ESS to be sold by Corvus Energy to offshore vessels and oil rigs globally.
