Injection Molding: Raw Material Control

Traditional production method of cemented carbide (pressing - sintering method) can only produce the products with simple shape, which limits the application range of cemented carbide. The appearance of powder injection molding technology brings an opportunity to further expand the application field of cemented carbide materials (such as the example of the following product).

Cemented carbides are particularly sensitive to extremely small impurities, voids, or other small fracture sources. Therefore, it is very important to study the possible defects and their causes in the process, and put forward preventive measures and solutions. It is very important to control the quality of cemented carbide powder because of its large friction and low density.

Critical Control Points of Raw Materials Control
1, Improving rheological behavior of feedstock and wettability between powder and binder by using surfactant.

2, Oxygen content of in powder. Oxygen content is the main factor affecting the properties of injection molded products, and it has great influence on the carbonization of sintered alloys.

3, Binder selection and component proportion control. At present, the binder of paraffin based multi-component system is the most widely used binder. According to the characteristics of the powder, the composition of the paraffin based binder should be adjusted accordingly to obtain the feedstock with good uniformity, shape keeping and flowability.
