Why Not Tungsten Alloy?

Tungsten alloy product, which is a chemical compound that contains carbon and tungsten and is similar to titanium carbide.

It was originally developed for use as a cutting tool, in machine tools applications, where it still finds widely use today.

Cemented tungsten carbide is neither a metal nor a ceramic, which is prepared by reacting carbon and tungsten at a temperature of between 1400-2000ºC. With its highest hardness as 86~93 HRA (68~81HRC), however, it is not called tungsten alloy, but tungsten carbide, because its superior wear resistance and high cutting speed.

Besides, as it is easy brickle, tungsten carbide is widely used as cutting blade, drill, bits, nozzles, etc. but for crack resistance, tungsten alloys are usually widely used as radiation shielding, crankshaft, counterweight, which are usually made of tungsten heavy alloy materil with its special properties as good elongation, small capacity with high density, good corrosion resistance, wonderful shock resistance, high radiation adsorption capability, etc.

The Advantage of Tungsten Fishing Jigs

Tungsten has gained a lot of popularity recently. Tungsten uses about 50% less material than lead for the same amount of weight. This means a 1-ounce tungsten sinker has a smaller volume, letting it penetrate weeds easier. Also, tungsten is more dense than lead. This makes your fishing more sensitive. It transmits vibrations differently depending on if you're fishing in mud, rock or wood.

1. Small volume

High density make tungsten alloy fishing sinkers/weights smaller than the conventional lead fishing weights. It will be hung up far less with a tungsten sinker than with a lead sinker because of its smaller size.

2. Hard

It's harder than lead fishing weight. It will not be stuck in the jowl of the fish. So the shape will be maintained longer.

3. Strong wind resistance

As the high density of tungsten, the tungsten alloy fishing sinker makes your fishing easier. It is extremely sensitive and can actually help you “feel” what the bottom is made of and what your bait is bumping into, such as brush, rocks, mud, etc.

Tungsten fishing weights/eyes are an ideal, environment-friendly alternative to lead weights, which are toxic and increasingly being labeled an environmental hazard.

The Ways To Set Rivets

Rivets are used in a variety of home repair, hobby, and craft applications to fasten thin materials together permanently. A rivet forms a connection when the shaft end of the rivet is deformed to hold it in place. Some rivets can be set by hand, while others require a rivet gun. While setting rivets by hand is a fairly easy operation, it's necessary to gather the right tools and safety equipment to do the job right.

1.Prepare the materials to be fastened by drilling a hole through all layers using the drill and drill bit or by using a punch, depending on the material. Steel or aluminum will require a drill bit, while fabrics and leathers will require a punch. Choose a drill bit or punch size that is the same diameter as the rivet shaft. Choose a rivet depth that matches the total thickness of the materials to be fastened. If the rivet is too long, it will not compress enough and the materials will be free to move. If the rivet is too short, it will not grasp the materials enough and it could pull out of the assembly.

2. Insert the rivet through the drilled or punched holes so that the shaft passes through all of the layers.

3. Place the assembly down on the rivet setting pad, with the end of the shaft oriented upwards. The tip of the rivet should be centered on the cone of the setting pad, so that the sides of the shaft can flare out when the rivet is struck.

4. While wearing safety glasses, hit the head of the rivet squarely with the hammer.

5. Turn the assembly over and examine the end of the rivet. The edges should have flared out away from the center, and the material should be fully compressed between the end of the rivet and the head. Repeat Step 4 if the rivet is not fully compressed.

Rivet Bar Orientation

1. Rest Rivet bar on inserted rivet and try to locate its point of balance.

2.With gun set in place, use rivet bar to push rivet (and gun assembly) outward. Rivet bar will then register at right angles to the rivet as it comes to rest on the aluminium.

3.Push rivet back into place with gun set and reposition rivet bar, if necessary, to maintain its point of balance on the rivet. (repeat steps 2 and 3 until point of balance is determined). Often the index finger can be placed on the back of the rivet bar directly opposite the rivet tail. It then becomes the 'sensor' for correct bar position.

4.Pressure is held on gun while riveting. Rivet bar is held with only moderate force (otherwise rivet may be set with head proud of surface). A rubber grommet may be used over the rivet tail to assist in squeezing parts together during riveting. It acts as a 'pressure plate'.

5.Duration of riveting is determined by experimentation with a test piece or previous experience.

What is Rivet

A rivet is a permanent mechanical fastener. Before it is installed it consists of a smooth cylindrical shaft with a head on one end. The end opposite the head is called the buck-tail. On installation the rivet is placed in a pre-drilled hole. Then the tail is "upset" (i.e. deformed) so that it expands to about 1.5 times the original shaft diameter and holds the rivet in place. To distinguish between the two ends of the rivet, the original head is called the factory head and the deformed end is called the shop head or buck-tail.

Because there is effectively a head on each end of an installed rivet it can support tension loads (loads parallel to the axis of the shaft); however, it is much more capable of supporting shear loads (loads perpendicular to the axis of the shaft). Bolts and screws are better suited for tension applications.

Fastenings used in traditional wooden boat building like copper nails and clinch bolts work on the principle of the rivet, but they were in use long before the term rivet was invented, and where they are remembered, are usually classified among the nails and bolts respectively.

Gold-plated Tungsten

In theory, as density is 19.1g/cm3, which is approximately 70% denser than lead, uranium could be used as material of making fake coin.

However, tungsten alloy jewelry is weakly radioactive and not as dense as gold, but usually works as gold substitution, so it does not appear to be a practical method.

Then people have discovered that tungsten is environmental-friendly, durable and hardness, the most important is that its density of 19.25g/cm3 is just about the same density as gold (19.3g/cm3), which bears the similar specific gravity. These advantages make tungsten alloy jewelry enjoys the superiority to be the best substitute for the costly metal oftungsten alloy jewelry gold or platinum.

It is necessary to tell that tungsten gold-plated would not work for several reasons but a coin with a tungsten center and gold all around tungsten alloy jewelry could not be detected as counterfeit by density measurement alone.

Application of Rivet

Before welding techniques and bolted joints were developed, metal framed buildings and structures such as the Eiffel Tower, Shukhov Tower and the Sydney Harbor Bridge were generally held together by riveting. Also automobile chassis were riveted. Riveting is still widely used in applications where light weight and high strength are critical, such as in an aircraft. Many sheet-metal alloys are preferably not welded as deformation and modification of material properties can occur. Common but more exotic uses of rivets are to reinforce jeans and to produce the distinctive sound of a sizzle cymbal.

When the rivet is cherry red, place the cavity of the air tool over the end of the rivet and turn on the tool. This works great and is much quicker than a bucking bar. If necessary you can heat and re do with the air tool. The finished job should look like the factory rivets or better and should be stronger than if the assembly were bolted together. This is not the easiest project in restoring an automobile but can be mastered with patience and common sense.

Tungsten Heavy Alloy

Tungsten is a rare metal, is also an important strategic material, and in ancient times was known as the "tungsten heavy alloy". 1783 Spanish named Deep Air Asia. The tungsten content in the earth's crust is 0.001%. There are about 20 minerals containing tungsten found until now. Tungsten deposits in general along with the activity and the formation of granitic magma. After smelting tungsten is silver-white lustrous and hard metal with high melting point.

Tungsten, also known as Wolfram, lapis ponderosas or heavy stone, has highest melting point of all elements except carbon - sources in scientific literature vary between 3387°C and 3422°C. Tungsten heavy alloy also has also excellent high temperature mechanical properties and the lowest expansion coefficient of all metals. A temperature of about 5700°C is needed to bring tungsten to boil which corresponds approximately to the temperature of the sun's surface. With a density of 19.25 g/cm3, tungsten is also among the heaviest metals. Its electrical conductivity at 0°C is about 28% of that of silver which itself has the highest conductivity of all metals.

The metal is known as tungsten in some countries and as wolfram in others, including Sweden, the country of origin of the name tungsten. The chemical symbol W, which is universally used to denote tungsten, suggests that wolfram was formerly the more generally accepted name for the element. In Britain, the mineral wolframite is also known as wolfram.

Since 1912, Tungsten heavy alloy (the element or, perhaps, an uncle) has been widely used to make the most essential part of any light bulb–the filament. Bumpers have tungsten heavy alloy with tungsten content of 3000 to 6000 one hundred watt light bulbs, depending on model and configuration.

During World War II, tungsten played a significant role in background political dealings. Portugal, as the main European source of the element, was put under pressure from both sides, because of its deposits of wolframite ore at Panasqueira. Tungsten's resistance to high temperatures and its strengthening of alloys made it an important raw material for the arms industry.
