Molybdenum market update on September 15, 2025

At the beginning of the week, the domestic molybdenum market continued the downward shift from last week, with the decline magnitude increasing.

The prices of molybdenum concentrate, ferromolybdenum, and ammonium heptamolybdate decreased by approximately 50 yuan per ton-unit, 3,000 yuan per ton, and 1,000 yuan per ton, respectively. It is understood that the previous prolonged and significant rise in molybdenum prices, combined with reduced downstream demand and accelerated capacity release from some molybdenum mining enterprises, has, to some extent, weakened suppliers’ confidence in raising prices. Recently, steel companies bidding for ferromolybdenum include Baosteel Shares, Hebei Iron and Steel, Anhui Maanshan Steel, Zhongnan Steel, Guangdong Shaogang, and Erzhong Equipment.

In terms of news, according to the China Iron and Steel Association, in the first ten days of September 2025, the social inventory of five major steel product varieties in 21 cities reached 9.20 million tons, increased by 320,000 tons month-on-month, a rise of 4.2%, with inventories continuing to rise; increased by 2.61 million tons compared to the beginning of the year, a rise of 39.6%; increased by 360,000 tons compared to the same period last year, a rise of 4.1%, with inventories turning from a year-on-year decrease to an increase. By region, social steel inventories in the seven major areas showed increases in all except for a decrease in Northwest China and stability in South China, with East China recording the largest increase in volume and North China the largest percentage increase. During the same period, in the first ten days of September, the social inventory of the five major steel product varieties all increased month-on-month, with rebar showing the largest increase in volume and wire rod the largest percentage increase; year-on-year, the inventories of rebar, cold-rolled sheet coil, and wire rod increased, while hot-rolled sheet coil and medium-thick plate decreased.
