Working mechanism

When a spade drill works, the metal separation from the work is achieved in similar manner by both twist drills and spade drills. The two cutting lips separate the metal by a shearing action that is identical to that of chip formation by a single point cutting tool. A most important feature of the cutting edge is the chip splitter, or chip breaker grooves. Instead of forming a single wide chip these grooves cause several chips to be readily disposed.

The spade drills have also the following operational and economical characters which help promote the use of spade drills.

Operational Characters

1) Greater inherent rigidity;

2) Heavier feed rates more than compensate for 10 % to 15 % reduction in RPM hence;

3) Faster production;

4) More chip clearance also adds to production speed.

Economical Characters

1) Two piece construction i.e.shank & blade affords many sizes in only one shank;

2) Blades can be replaced or resharpened;

3) Same blades can be used on short, long & special shanks;

4) Depth to diameter ratio in Spade drilling has been achieved upto 20 : 1;

5) With special blades, core drilling, counter boring and bottoming to flat or contoured shape can be achieved;

6) The shanks can vary from straight to tapered, long to Extra long and with Miling Machine application i.e. ISO - 40 etc.

For some instances, Y-10 G10+5 JB/T 9145-1999. It means that the material is tungsten carbide, the nominal diameter is 10mm, the tolerance class is 10, the deviation of the tungsten carbide ball batch diameter is +5μm and it is in accordance with the standard of JB/T 9145-1999.

Another Y24 G40 b JB/T 9145-2010, which means that the material is tungsten carbide, the nominal diameter is 24mm, the tolerance class is 40, it does not supplied by the variation of the batch diameter and it is in accordance with the standard of JB/T 9145-2010. In addition, the method of symbol is supposed to be marked on the order form, certification, packing of tungsten carbide ball and other needs symbol. Spade drills are a known device which in many ways surpasses twist drills in range 24 mm onwards. Spade drills have been developed from U-shaped drills and are already applied in a wide range（such as radial drilling tool, vertical/horizontal drilling machine, etc.）with relatively low requirement on equipments.

Structure of spade drill

There are two principal parts to a spade drill, namely the blade and the holder. The holder has a slot into which the blade fits, a wide slot at the back of the blade engages with a tongue in the holder slot to accurately locate the blade. A retaining screw holds the two parts together.

Types of spade drill

The blade is usually high speed steel blade or cemented carbide tipped blade.The diameter of carbide blades range from 9mm to 32mm, while HSS blades from 9mm to 68mm(usually grade M42 with 8% Cobalt). Some non-standardized blades can be even larger.

Standard stub, short, long and extra long holders are available, according to the ratio of holder length to blade diameter we have types of 3D, 5D, 7D, 9D or onward, and for very deep holes, special holders having wear strips to support and guide the drill are often used. Spade drills can be given with holders having coolant holes, either straight holes or helix ones, to direct cutting fluid, under pressure, to the cutting edge.

The first digit is Y, which is the first letter of tungsten carbide in Chinese pronunciation. The second digit refers to the nominal diameter of tungsten carbide ball (mm), usually ignored. The third digit is the tolerance class code of tungsten carbide ball, usually adds letter G in front of tungsten carbide ball tolerance class to consist of tolerance level code, such as G3, G5, G10, G16, G20, G100 and so on. The next digit is the deviation of the batch diameter or b mark (means it does not supplied by the variation of the batch diameter), the average deviation of the diameter uses plus or minus and number to present (μm), and it is also usually ignored. At last, it is the standard number of tungsten carbide ball and the complementary technical conditions.

In 1999 the US Army began manufacturing "green" bullets. Tungsten is thought to be one of the most sought-after materials for the bullets, and which used primarily for shooting practice during peace time - are as deadly to humans as their predecessors but less deadly to the Earth.

The lead bullets the Army uses in traditional have been bioaccumulating at shooting ranges, forcing several to close. But now these bullets will be replaced with environmentally friendly bullets which made by tungsten. Not only is tungsten more environmentally "benign" than lead, but ozone depleting chemicals and volatile organic compounds have been eliminated from the bullet manufacturing process - resulting in pollution prevention and money savings. Although tungsten is more expensive than lead, But the cleanup of the manufacturing process actually will result in savings of $0.01 to $0.05 per round, or $5 million to $20 million per year，as the army reported.

Recently years millions green bullets be produced. Priority distribution of the bullets will be given to closed shooting ranges and to a new National Guard shooting range near Gnome, Alaska, that has not been contaminated by lead bullets.
