Why Tungsten Rings Are Increasing in Popularity

Tungsten rings have been gaining popularity over the past 10 years, originally being purchased only by men that worked with their hands. Construction workers, manual laborers and those rough on hands sought out alternatives to precious metals that easily scratched and wore down.
Tungsten Carbide was also desirable due to the cracking point if severe force struck the finger. In the case of severe force a tungsten wedding band is more apt to crack than take off someones skin or even their finger! The mentioned are not the only reasons tungsten is gaining popularity. Tungsten is becoming more desirable due to the endless design possibilities that the ring style now possesses. Below are some of the many styles that tungsten is now manufactured in.
Classic Tungsten Carbide Rings
Classic Tungsten Wedding bands come in the popular high polished dome shape, flat pipe cut design, Beveled Edge and Step Down edge. The Finish can be polished, brushed, florentine or even a dual tone finish. The inner diameter is always a comfort fit allowing the ring to be comfortable regardless of width, size and weight of the ring. Men and women find wearing tungsten rings ideal for this one reason.
Carved Tungsten Bands
Carved Tungsten Wedding rings are fairly new to the retail market, only being found in a few select online retailers. With Carved tungsten the design is either carved deep into the metal or raised from the surface of the rings. With carved tungsten the finish will be sure to last a lifetime and will only look better with age.
Inlay Tungsten Rings
Inlay Rings consist of redwood inlays, colorful shell, carbon fiber, ceramic and precious metal inlays. Inlay rings have the center protected on both sides by tungsten and typically coated in a liquid crystal protecting the inlay. Many choose inlay tungsten wedding bands due to the pure unique style the ring exhibits.
Black, Gold and Chocolate Tungsten
Colored tungsten is ideal for those that want a unique ring without spending a lot of money for it. With the three colors a tungsten ring is plated with the coloring and then the ring is laser etches or finished to specification. Typically colored tungsten is for fashion purposes only as the coloring can wear down with extensive wear.

The Types of Tungsten Darts

- Published on Wednesday, 23 January 2013 17:10
Tungsten, unlike brass and nickel-silver, is a very heavy and dense metal. It is usually mixed with nickel so you will see on a package something like 80-20 (80% tungsten/20% nickel). It is harder to work with but will last longer than the other two (especially the knurling). On average, a 20 gram tungsten dart will be ½ the size of a 20 gram brass dart which will allow for tighter groupings on the board.
All serious dart players throw tungsten darts, because the density of the tungsten material allows the tungsten darts to have a thinner diameter. It allows this to occur, while still maintaining the same weight as a thicker dart. A thinner dart is an important component for higher scoring. Thinner darts occupy less real estate on the dart board.
This allows you to fit more of these thinner darts into a small area. As thicker darts occupy more space on a dart board, they are easier to hit, resulting in dart deflections. The dart deflections throw your dart off course, which means you just missed the number your were throwing at.
Tungsten dart players have a definitive advantage over traditional brass. In addition to less deflections, they are being produced with great knurling patterns on the barrels. These provide a confident grip with less potential for slipping. I like the fact that these darts come in a variety of both steel tip and soft tip sets.
The majority of steel-point darts used by competitive players in league and tournament play are now made of 90% Tungsten. Soft-tip darts are commonly made of 80% tungsten, which is cheaper, less dense, and less brittle.
Arachnid Darts
Arachnid offers a great line of entry level tungsten soft tip darts that won’t leave you light in the hip. There are several sets that can be had for less than thirty dollars.
The SFP900 is a 90 percent tungsten dart in a weight of 18 grams. These tungsten darts have thinner barrels that give you tighter groupings for more control and higher scores. There are three darts in this set, and it comes with three extra flights and three replacement shafts. There are also seven spare soft tip points. You’ll like the ‘SideRider’ case that will allow you to safely transport your darts on your belt. With a one year warranty, you can be confident that it is a good buy.
The SFP800 set from Arachnid, has an 80 percent tungsten barrel dart. That is about the only difference from the SFP900. Everything else, and all the accessories included are the same as the SFP900.
The SFP700-16 is a lighter, eighty percent tungsten dart. At 16 grams, this set offers a lighter feel, and still gives you that thin barrel. Everything you need is in this set, and it is one of the least expensive of the bunch.
Bottelsen Aces High Tungsten Da
The Bottelsen Aces High tungsten darts give you the great quality that Bottelsen is known for, at a very affordable price. These darts have been referred to as the most affordable steel-tipped tungsten darts on the market today.
Bottelsen Hammerhead Tungsten Darts
If you have been playing darts for even a short period of time, then you have most likely heard of the Bottelsen Hammerhead darts. These are the ground-breaking darts that practically eliminate bounce outs due to hitting wires on the bristle boards.
Bottelsen Gorilla Grip Silverback Tungsten Darts
The Bottelsen Gorilla Grip Silverback darts are a popular choice of the avid dart player. These 90 percent tungsten darts are known for their trade marked ‘Gorilla Grip’ knurling.
Halex Darts
If you are looking for a tungsten steel tip dart, that is well made and won’t break the bank, then you need to give the Cambridge CX-5000 a closer look, if you are into soft tip darts, and you are in the market for a quality set of tungsten darts that won’t break the bank, then you need to check out the Halex Cambridge CX-6000 tungsten dart set. You can be sure to stand out in a crowd when you throw the Cambridge CX-8000, and at the end of the match, it will be your darts in the bulls eye.
Nodor Darts
Nodor Professional tungsten steel tip darts are available in three different barrel densities. You can get the Nodor Professional in a 90 percent tungsten barrel, an 85 percent tungsten barrel, and an 80 percent tungsten barrel. The 85 percent tungsten barrel is somewhat of a unique offering.
Tungsten dart barrels are popular with serious dart players because of the small diameter barrels that can be achieved with the weight and density of the tungsten materials. The small diameter results in less deflections and higher scoring.
The Nodor 90 percent tungsten steel tip dart set comes packaged in a SideRider case, with three complete darts, three spare flights and shafts, and a handy dart tool. These can be found in 21 gram, 23 gram, and 26 gram weights.
The Nodor Professional 85 percent tungsten steel tip darts are offered in 22 gram, 24 gram, and 25 gram weights. This three dart set includes spare shafts and flights as well, and comes with a SideRider case.
The Nodor 80 percent tungsten dart set comes on a bit lighter weights. You can get an 18 gram, 22 gram, or 24 gram dart. This set will include the protective Slim Trac case, extra flights, and shafts.
All of the Nodor Professional tungsten dart lines are protected by a one year warranty against defects. So you can be ensured of receiving a quality product that is backed by a trusted manufacturer.

Tungsten Rings: Beauty and Durable

- Category: Tungsten Information
- Published on Wednesday, 23 January 2013 16:48
A wedding ring is the best exemplification of the love between a husband and a wife. It symbolizes the covenant that they made with one another during their marriage. Usually, wedding rings are made using gold or silver as the base material. These metals are considered as very precious and as such are only given in the most special of occasions. Today, technology offers more options for wedding rings. The use of other materials which are stronger than those mentioned is made possible.
Different Material
Tungsten carbide is a powdery substance which is used to create wedding rings. Tungsten carbide rings last longer than steel rings because tungsten carbide is three times stiffer than steel. It is also denser than titanium meaning that it can withstand more pressure. Additionally, it was found out that tungsten carbide is resistant to any abrasions of any kind. Only the strongest substances such as diamond are able to scratch this substance.
Different Design
A unique material needs an equally unique design to complement one another. This is why weddings bands made of tungsten carbide usually use Celtic designs. Celtic rings depict the traditional Celtic symbols such as the Celtic cross and the Five-fold. These images symbolize power and eternity among other things. The Celtic knot is a central aspect among Celtic designs. It symbolizes the never ending flow of life within humans. Although there are only few records which give meaning to these symbols, they are nevertheless used because of their magnificent design.
Conclusion
Tungsten carbide rings are proven to be very durable and will not lose their lustre even after much time has passed. They are also virtually scratch-proof which makes it even more appealing to buy rings made out of this material. Celtic rings accentuate the uniqueness of tungsten carbide by providing a certain amount of uniqueness of its own. Designs found on these rings cannot be found anywhere else. It is a symbol of a culture that is preserved even though records are scarce. The use of these rings as weddings bands show a mixture of history, modernization, and technology. A combination like this is rarely seen and must be treasured until the end of time.

Why Is It Called Tungsten Carbide?

- Category: Tungsten Information
- Published on Wednesday, 23 January 2013 16:34
What is the difference between tungsten and tungsten carbide? You have undoubtedly seen the final product, your beautiful, shiny, scratch resistant tungsten carbide ring. But, the formation of those compounds that allow for the creation of your ring or piece of tungsten carbide jewelry is dependent on tungsten's atomic makeup.
We begin with an atom. There are three types of elements in an atom and they are called electron (negatively charged atom), proton (positively charged atom), and neutron (an atom with no charge). Imagine a group of protons and neutrons clumped together. This is called a nucleus. Orbiting the nucleus are electrons. Together, they form an atom.
At this point, you can combine atoms to create a molecule. Most substances that surround us are made up of molecules and are compounds of different elements. For example, water is a compound of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom (H2O). The naming convention for a compound with only two elements ends with the syllable "ide". For example, oxygen and carbon combine to create carbon dioxide.
The tungsten atom consists of seventy-four protons, seventy-four neutrons and varying number of neutrons. There are five stable isotopes (different versions of its atom) that contain 106, 108, 109, 110 and 112 neutrons. Averaging the amount of neutrons in the stable tungsten isotopes (106 + 108 + 109 + 110 + 112 / 5) gives tungsten an average amount neutron amount of 109. Adding the neutrons plus the protons (74) generates the tungsten atom's atomic mass of 183.
The manner in which the tungsten atom forms compounds with other elements is dictated by its outer electron shells. The tungsten atom consists of six electron shells. The first four shells are "full" - meaning, they do not have any room to "share" electrons with another element. The inner shell consists of 2 electrons. There are 8 in the second shell. The third shell contains 18, whereas the fourth shell has 32 electrons. The last two shells, which are the ones that form compounds with other elements contain 12 (fifth shell) and 2 (the sixth or outer shell).
Because the last two shells have room for more electrons, they will form chemical bonds with other elements, such as carbon. By combining both tungsten and carbon, we end up with a compound known as tungsten carbide that is found in the tungsten wedding bands and other tungsten carbide jewelry that are becoming increasingly popular.

the Best Advantages of Tungsten Rings
- Details
- Category: Tungsten Information
- Published on Wednesday, 23 January 2013 16:16
There are many things that tungsten offers that no other wedding band can provide. Here is a short list of the very best tungsten advantages.
1. Scratch Resistance - Tungsten is the world's hardest metal. It is smelted at a temperature of over 6000°F, the highest of any metal. In addition to those properties, it is nearly impossible to scratch. That means that when you purchase a tungsten wedding band, you can rest assured it will look just as good 50 years from now as it will on your wedding day.
2. Bend resistant - Metals with less tensile strength bend and warp under pressure. That means that they can be reshaped or resided if necessary, but it also means that they can bend or change shape over time. While that is usually no more than an inconvenience day to day, if you are unfortunate enough to get your finger trapped in something, they can actually become dangerous. Tungsten rings don't carry that hazard.
3. Hypoallergenic - Tungsten rings that are made properly are hypoallergenic. That means you want to find tungsten carbide rings not tungsten alloys of a different type. Cheap tungsten rings are often alloyed with cobalt or nickel, both highly allergenic substances. Make sure to ask what is in your ring before you buy it. If you are going to wear a ring every day, getting cheaper alloys is asking for trouble.
4. Design - In general, when you go looking for a wedding band in gold or platinum, you choices of design are quite limited. This is so often the case and people will get married with a simple band and then switch out to something more interesting later on. Wouldn't you rather get one band that will stay with you forever? Tungsten bands come in many different styles. Some are carved, others etched, and some are blended with black tungsten creating a unique appearance unlike anything you can get with another metal.
The Dreaded Myth
Like titanium, tungsten is associated with a particular, erroneous myth. There is an urban legend that states that tungsten is too dangerous to use for rings since it can't be cut in case of emergency. That is not true. While tungsten does require special tools to cut, emergency rooms and jewelers are completely capable of dealing with tungsten rings. In fact, because tungsten doesn't bend, it can actually be safer to wear if you suffer a hand injury - it won't compress or cut off circulation to your finger.
This myth is probably resulted from the fact that tungsten can't be resided. The metal is too hard for such treatment, meaning if you outgrow your ring, you will need to replace it instead.

With Valentine's Day quickly approaching many are left wondering what to get their significant other. Although the traditional flowers and candies are nice it is typically overdone. What women and men like are gifts that unique, sentimental and affordable in this rough economy. One gift that would be sure to please is a Celtic Tungsten ring or bracelet. A Celtic tungsten ring or bracelet has the three components of being unique, sentimental and affordable. Below are a few popular Celtic symbols that represent love, life and family.
The Popular Claddagh Symbol
The hands that the ring represents holding the heart symbolize friendship while the heart is signifying love. The direction that the person wears the ring is also important. A ring worn on the left hand with the crown pointing away from the heart symbolizes that the person is married or engaged to be married. A Claddagh ring worn on the right hand with the crown pointing away from the heart symbolizes a person is interested in starting a relationship. Lastly, a person wearing a Claddagh ring on their right hand with the crown pointing towards the heart symbolizes a person that does not want to start a relationship.
Mo Anam Cara Ring
The Mo Anam Cara phrase symbolizes "My Soul Mate." This is a very popular phrase that is commonly requested as a special engraving on wedding bands or engagement rings. The Mo Anam Cara symbol may also accompany other symbols such as the popular Claddagh symbol or a cross for added symbolic meaning.
Celtic Knotwork Rings
The Celtic knotwork is found on many Celtic rings and bracelets. The Celtic weaving has many symbolic meanings depending on the knotwork chosen. Celtic knotwork could symbolize love, happiness, life, family and loyalty. Many times the Celtic knotwork would accompany other symbols such as a cross, initials or even the Claddagh symbol.
Cross Rings
Cross Rings signify love and religious beliefs. The cross can stand alone on a tungsten wedding band or accompany other symbols such as the Claddagh symbol or Celtic knotwork. Crosses that stand alone as the focal point of the ring are classically beautiful on their own.

The Secret of Tungsten Carbide Jewelry
- Details
- Category: Tungsten Information
- Published on Tuesday, 22 January 2013 18:23
The History
Tungsten (Swedish and Danish tung sten meaning "heavy stone", even though the current name for the element in Swedish is Wolfram) was first suggested to exist by Peter Woulfe in 1779 who examined wolframite and concluded that it must contain a new substance. In 1781 Carl Wilhelm Scheele ascertained that a new acid could be made from tungstenite. Scheele and Torbern Bergman suggested that it could be possible to obtain a new metal by reducing tungstic acid. In 1783 JosŽ and Fausto Elhuyar found an acid in wolframite that was identical to tungstic acid. In Spain later that year the brothers succeeded in isolating tungsten through reduction of this acid with charcoal. They are credited with the discovery of the element.
Like gold, silver and platinum, Tungsten is an element #74. It is naturally occurring and is one of the main elements responsible for the development of human civilization. Without tungsten, we would not have the incandescent light bulb as the filament inside the bulb is tungsten and has the toughness and resilience exceeding any other metal. In 1922 the Germans developed Tungsten Carbide as the material used in making better cutting tool bits for precision milling and cutting of steel. In World War II, tungsten played an enormous role in background political dealings. Portugal, as the main European source of the element, was put under pressure from both sides, because of its sources of wolframite ore. The resistance to high temperatures, as well as the extreme strength of its alloys, made the metal into a very important raw material for the weaponry industry.
Today tungsten carbide is in widespread use in the worldwide machinery of modern industry and is a darling super alloy that has made aerospace advances possible. And it is still the one little item that makes a light bulb work.
Tungsten Properties
Pure tungsten, that is, before alloying with any other material, is steel-gray to tin-white and is a very hard element. Tungsten can be cut with a hacksaw when it is very pure (it is brittle and hard to work when impure) and is otherwise worked by forging, drawing, or extruding. This element has the highest melting point (3422 ¡C) (6192 ¡F), lowest vapor pressure and the highest tensile strength at temperatures above 1650 ¡C (3000 ¡F) of all metals. Its corrosion resistance is excellent and any attack by a mineral acid is virtually imperceptible. Tungsten metal forms a protective oxide when exposed to air but can be oxidized at high temperature. When alloyed in small quantities with steel, it greatly increases its hardness.
Tungsten is: Four times stiffer than steel Six times stiffer than aluminum 100 times stiffer than plastic
Tungsten has the highest melting point and boiling point of all the elements, melting at 3,420 degrees C or 6,700 degrees F, and boiling at 5,700 degrees C and 10,300 degrees F. What this means to the average person is that on the surface of the Sun, Tungsten would become liquid, but if you dropped a piece of Tungsten from outer space, it would enter the EarthÕs atmosphere, heat up and glow to red color, and still hit the Earth in a solid piece.
Tungsten As Used in Jewelry
Tungsten Carbide has only recently been used in the fashioning of jewelry due to its hypoallergenic nature and the fact that due to its extreme hardness it is not apt to lose its luster like other polished metals. In fact, a ring or bracelet made from Tungsten Carbide will never need polishing and it is virtually scratchproof...only another item with a diamond or diamond surface or a special sapphire in it can scratch tungsten jewelry. Carefree Tungsten Carbide is made without the use of any Cobalt additive and not just anyone can make a piece of Tungsten Carbide jewelry. In order to manufacture a perfectly crafted piece of jewelry, it takes skill that only a few companies have mastered. It cannot be made in someoneÕs garage with a lathe and a machinist.
Jewelry With a Lifetime High Polish
Tungsten rings and bracelets are heavy, and Tungsten Carbide is the hardest of all metals. It is polished to a perfect mirror finish using diamonds, and, unlike other metals, it will retain the exact polish finish for decades to come.
The Distinction of Wearing an Exotic Metal
Because it has the highest melting point of any metal known, Tungsten Carbide is used in space age applications and leading edge military projects such as hand held nuclear fusion devices. The hardness and heat resistance of Tungsten Carbide renders it impervious to radiation. Its tough enduring qualities make it the perfect masculine metal for a manÕs ring or bracelet.
The Art and Science of Master Craftsmanship
Tungsten Carbide rings and bracelets are manufactured using sophisticated vacuum induction furnaces that require an oxygen free environment, and reaching an amazing temperature over 6,200 degrees F. If an astronaut dropped one of these rings from 300 miles above the earth, it would enter the atmosphere glowing red-hot and land on the surface of the Earth virtually unscathed by the experience.
Can a Tungsten Carbide Ring be Re-sized?
Unlike most other rings, a local jeweler cannot size Tungsten Carbide rings. It is just impossible to rework the material.
How to Care for your Tungsten Carbide Jewelry
Your jewelry will require very little care. Rubbing with any clean cloth will bring out and restore the bright finish, as it was on the day you first received the ring or bracelet. This jewelry is the only jewelry of any kind that will last a lifetime with no sign of wear. Buy it when you are age 20 and at age 70 it will look exactly the same.
