China’s Domestic Rare Earth Market – Dec. 29, 2021

China’s domestic rare earth market as a whole is in a dilemma at the end of December 29, 2021. Under the insufficient spot supply of raw materials and insufficient consumption capacity of downstream users, the price game between buyers and sellers is fierce, which in turn leads to slow order growth.

From the supply side, first, New Year’s Day and the Winter Olympics are approaching, which has greatly strengthened the environmental protection efforts in various regions. Coupled with factors such as lower temperatures and rebound in some provinces, the production of rare earth smelting and separation enterprises is restricted more serious; second, due to the relatively high geographic risks of some overseas countries and the slow international logistics and transportation, China's rare earth imports are not large.

From the demand side, although the rapid development of new energy vehicles, wind power generation, 3C electronics, energy-saving home appliances and other industries has greatly stimulated the demand for rare earth functional materials, the current prices of rare earth raw materials are not low and there is not much liquidity near the end of the year. As a result, most downstream users have a strong fear of heights, which makes it difficult to increase the volume of transactions.

According to customs data, in November 2021, the import volume of rare earth metal ore in the United States was 13306.5 tons, a month-on-month increase of 520% and a year-on-year increase of 135%; the import volume of mixed rare earth carbonate was 282.7 tons, a month-on-month increase of 182%, and a year-on-year decrease of 59 %. The import volume of unlisted rare earth oxide in Myanmar was 1324.3 tons, an increase of 7626% month-on-month and 16% year-on-year; the import volume of unlisted rare earth oxide in Malaysia was 120 tons, an increase of 50% month-on-month and an increase of 20% year-on-year; Myanmar unlisted The import volume of rare earth metals and their mixtures was 99.5 tons by country, an increase of 279% month-on-month and a year-on-year decrease of 90%.
