Engagement and wedding rings are generally silver or gold bands, sparkling with diamonds or other precious stones. These rings are symbols of the enduring love between a husband and wife. Which finger the rings are worn on depends on the design of the rings, whether they are a set and whether it is before or after the wedding ceremony.
1.Wear the engagement ring of a set before the wedding day. In the traditional manner, the engagement ring is worn on the third finger of the bride-to-be's left hand.
2.Move the engagement ring on the day of the wedding. Traditionally, the wedding ring is worn on the hand that is considered closer to the heart, so the engagement ring must be moved to the third finger of the bride's right hand.
3.Wear both the engagement and wedding rings after the wedding ceremony. The bride moves the engagement ring back to the third finger on her left hand, on the outside of the wedding ring.Nonmatching Rings
4.Wear the engagement ring and wedding ring on separate hands. Sometimes, the engagement ring and wedding ring do not match. In this case, the bride wears the wedding ring on the third finger of her left hand and the engagement ring on the hand and finger she chooses.
5.Wear an engagement ring and ring guard. Before the wedding day, the bride wears the engagement ring on the third finger of her left hand. On the wedding day, she moves the engagement ring to her right hand. After the wedding ceremony, the bride inserts the engagement ring into the ring guard and wears both on the third finger of her left hand.
6.Wear an eternity ring with the engagement and wedding ring. When the wife receives an eternity ring, the wedding ring is worn nearest the hand, then the engagement ring and then the eternity ring. If the wedding and engagement ring are too wide, the eternity ring can be worn on any other finger.

How to Remove Tight Finger Rings

Having a ring stuck on your finger is inconvenient and dangerous for a number of reasons. A ring that is too tight can cut off blood circulation to your finger, potentially causing numbness and nerve damage. If the ring gets caught on something and you can't remove it, you might find yourself in an embarrassing or dangerous situation.
1.Do not struggle. If the ring doesn't easily come off after a few firm wiggles, remain calm. Trying to force the ring off of your finger will cause the finger to swell, making it even more difficult to remove the ring. If you've already struggled, wait at least 30 minutes before trying again. Gently rock the ring back and forth to try to loosen it and fit it over your knuckle.
2.Soak your finger in ice water to try and reduce swelling. If the ring is very tight, it could have caused swelling before you even attempted to remove it. Be sure the water is very cold, and thoroughly immerse the finger for three to five minutes. Try removing the ring again without struggling.
3.Apply a bit of lubricant to your finger, such as soapy water. This will serve to remove any grime or dried perspiration lingering underneath the ring. Gentry work the ring back and forth on your finger to ensure the soapy water reaches underneath the ring. Rock it toward your knuckle, and feel free to apply a slight twisting motion.
4.Slide the ring as close to your hand as possible and wrap a length of dental floss around the rest of the finger. The floss must be wrapped tightly, and this trick should be done quickly to avoid numbness. The floss will compress the skin of your finger and you should be able to slide the ring over it. Allow the floss to unravel as you pass the ring over the length of your finger.
5.Visit a jeweler if none of these methods work. The jeweler will be able to cut off the ring with a special protected saw. Don't try this method at home--only an expert will have the tools and skills necessary. The ring may be repairable after it has been removed.

A stuck ring can happen to anyone. The problem is the more you tug and pull on the ring, the more swollen your finger will get and the more stuck you ring will get. It may seem as though you’ll never be able to get the ring off. Don’t worry, however. The ring does not have to be on your finger forever. If you try a few simple techniques, you should soon be able to remove that stuck ring.
1.Rub hair conditioner on your finger to help ease the ring off. Hold your fingers toward the ceiling and gently rub the area with the conditioner. The ring should slide right off the finger after a minute or two.
2.Dab a small amount vegetable shortening around the ring and finger. The shortening will make the finger slippery enough for the ring to come right off.
3.Smear mayonnaise around the ring and finger and it should also help you easily remove the ring.
4.Spray a little bit of glass cleaner around the ring and finger and twist the ring gently. The glass cleaner will make your finger slippery enough that the ring should come right off.

How to Get Rid of Jewelry Tarnish

Silver, copper, brass and other semi-reactive materials are prone to tarnish. Instead of using harsh commercial products to remove it from jewelry, eliminate tarnish using ordinary ingredients you have at home. The solutions will be gentler on the jewelry and on your hands.
1.Soak jewelry in a baking soda mixture. Line a deep dish with aluminum foil. Place the tarnished jewelry into the dish, making sure it has direct contact with the foil. Boil a quart of water in a saucepan. Remove it from the burner, then add 1/4 cup of baking soda to the hot water one teaspoon at a time, so the mixture does not fizz up and out of the pot. Pour the solution over the jewelry until it is fully immersed. Soak the pieces until you see all the tarnish has vanished.
2.Make a vinegar-based tarnish remover. In a shallow dish, combine 2 teaspoons of table salt and 1/2 cup of vinegar. Place the jewelry in the mixture, making sure it is fully covered. Leave your jewelry in the mixture until you see all the tarnish has disappeared. Rinse well with warm water and allow to air dry.
3.Give your jewelry a lemon juice bath. Squeeze fresh lemon juice into a shallow dish. Place your jewelry in the dish and make sure it is fully covered. Leave your jewelry in the lemon juice until you see all the tarnish has disappeared. Rinse well with warm water and allow to air dry.

Engraving your ring with the date you and your spouse became engaged is also an option.

Although stainless steel is widely recognized as an excellent material for appliances and machinery due to its strength and durability, it also makes for some pretty cool jewelry. In fact, more and more couples are considering stainless steel for their wedding rings. Stainless steel is a cool gray color that complements diamonds and matches most clothing. It also can look very modern and masculine. As an added benefit, stainless steel is very difficult to scratch or break. Unfortunately, this quality makes stainless steel rings very difficult to resize.

How to Avoid Buying a Fake Diamond Ring

You may think you're an expert at spotting fake jewels, but with some of the new diamond facsimiles on the market, even a jeweler might not be able to spot the imposters.
1.Ask if the stone is a genuine diamond or if it is a cubic zirconia, moissanite or other synthetic substance. A reputable jeweler will give you an honest answer.
2.Look at the setting and mount. Since stones such as cubic zirconia are so much cheaper than diamonds, they are sometimes set in inferior metals.
3.Check the wear and tear on the stone. A cubic zirconia is not as durable as a diamond and may show signs of scratches or nicks.
4.Take the stone to a trusted jeweler. Looking through a jeweler's loupe, he or she should be able to spot a fake stone right away. If the jeweler cannot tell by examining the stone, he or she will have instruments that can verify its authenticity.
5.It is highly recommended that you obtain a certificate from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). The GIA, the largest impartial diamond grading authority in the world, issues a grading report after it examines the diamond and details it specifications.
6.Have the stone appraised by an independent appraiser who is affiliated with a professional organization such as the American Society of Appraisers (ASA). Ask for a certificate indicating the value and characteristics of the stone.

How to Determine Men's Ring Size
- Details

- Hits: 2146
An accurately sized ring makes all the difference in whether a man will wear it. The correct size depends not only on the size of the man's finger but also on the style of ring. The best way to get the right size is by measuring a ring that already fits correctly however, if this is not possible, you can use other methods. When in doubt, it is better to purchase a ring that is slightly too big rather than one that is too small. In most cases, it is easier to make a ring smaller than larger.
1.Wrap a piece of string or a thin strip of paper around the base of the man's finger.
2.Mark the string with a pen at the point where the string overlaps and makes a complete circle. Remove the string and take the measurement a second time to assure accuracy.
3.Measure the string against the millimeter side of a ruler. Compare this measurement against a chart like the one provided by the website Just Mens Rings or contact a jeweler. Provide a jeweler with the millimeter measurement and she can tell you the ring size that the measurement converts to.

How to Insure An Engagement Ring
- Details

- Hits: 2093
For many people, an engagement ring is the largest investment they've made thus far in their life. Aside from it's emotional value, it also can be of steep monetary value. Just like a home, you should appraise and insure an engagement ring.
1.Get an appraisal from an independent jeweler, not a gem lab report. A gem lab report is for an unmounted diamond and does not adequately appraise the value of a piece of wearable jewelry.
2.Read your insurance policy. If you currently have a homeowners or a renters insurance policy, read it to find out how much coverage it provides for your engagement ring and other jewelry.
3.Review your deductible. Some policies, depending on your location, may insure the engagement ring without a deductible.
4.Purchase a separate policy for your engagement ring. If your ring is of considerable value, you might want to consider purchasing a separate policy to ensure that it is adequately covered.
5.Take photos of your engagement ring. Having photos of your ring is helpful in the event of a loss.
6.Appraise your jewelry regularly. Reassessment of jewelry is necessary as the value may increase or decrease over time, depending on market conditions. Having periodic appraisals will prove to be helpful in the event your engagement ring is damaged, lost or stolen.

Types of Wedding Bands
- Details
- Category: Tungsten Jewelry News & Info
- Published on Tuesday, 19 November 2013 11:38
- Hits: 1111
The wedding band is the symbol of eternal love between spouses. Some people select a band based on functionality, considering the metal type and fit above all else. Others care more about the style of the ring -- how it looks and what special meaning the design might hold. No matter what's important to you, there are several details to consider when selecting the type of ring that will represent your commitment and love.
Metals
There are several metal alloys to choose from for a wedding band. Gold -- both white- and yellow-colored -- is very common, though it is soft and scratches easily.
Titanium and tungsten are the most durable metals. They appear more rugged and industrial and are a popular modern choice for men's bands. Though the two metals look similarly, they have different weights; tungsten is very heavy while titanium is rather lightweight.Platinum and palladium are more durable than gold, but not quite as durable as tungsten or titanium. They are very shiny and are also the most expensive metals used in jewelry.
Finish
If you choose a plain band, you can customize the sheen of the metal to your liking. A matte finish gives a sanded, low-sheen appearance. For a medium sheen, go with a satin finish. A shiny finish will, as the name suggests, give your ring a high-lustre, shiny appearance.
More unique and modern finishes include sandstone, which gives the ring a sandy appearance, or hammered, which results in a multifaceted, scaly effect.
Profile
Rings have different shapes or profiles which make them fit differently. First is a flat profile, or flat with softened edges. This means the cross section of the ring is rectangular in shape. There are also D-shaped profiles (the outside is slightly curved while the inside lies flat) and courting profiles (the outside curves around the finger while the inside curves against the finger). A halo-shaped ring is true to its name and is cylindrical all the way around like a halo.
Style
Today, jewelers offer many styles and designs for wedding bands aside from the traditional plain band. A classic ring may have a conservative engraving or beveling style.
Contemporary bands usually appear more modern with non-traditional designs and motifs, and they may include two or more colors of metal. Hand-crafted bands are more traditional and artistic and often have a woven appearance. Some bands include diamonds or other gemstones either embedded into the band itself or above the band in a setting. You may also choose to have your ring engraved with a significant pattern (like a Celtic design) or message.
