How to Shorten a Watch Band

Most jewelry pieces come in ready-made sizes. Although you may have a general idea of your size, many people find that they are in between sizes: One size is too tight, but the next size up is too loose. If you buy a watch that is too big, you can usually customize it to your wrist size. You simply remove links from a metal-based watchband. You can always take it to a professional jeweler, or you can do it yourself with a few tool

1.Shorten the watchband by moving the spring bar on the watch's clasp. This spring bar is in place for wearers to easily adjust the size of the watchband. Simply insert the screwdriver into the hole in the spring bar. This will allow you to gently move the spring bar along until you reach the desired location.

2.Determine how many links you need to remove from the watchband if it is still too big after you shorten the spring bar. It's easier to remove multiple links at once, rather than one at a time.

3.Insert the screwdriver into the hole on top of the link you would like to remove.

4.Press firmly to release the link pin--the L-shaped pin that keeps the link in place. You will feel a slight give once it unlocks.

5.Pull up on the link pin. It will easily slide out.

6.Take out the link pin on an adjacent link. You will always need to remove at least two link pins to remove one link, because of the way in which watchbands are linked together.

7.Remove the link. If you are removing multiple links, do so at this time.

8.Put the watchband back together, reinserting the link pin in place.

9.Use a jeweler's hammer to push the link pin back into place.

How to Adjust an Expansion Watchband

Not all watches come in the perfect size for the wearer. While you can simply add another notch to a leather watchband, metal expansion bands require a bit more work to adjust the fit. This type of work requires a lot of careful precision so it's best to work with tools specifically designed for watch repair. Having specialized kit isn't necessary to adjust the watchband, however. A pair of needle nose pliers will also get the job done.

1.Slip the watch on. Without expanding the watchband, pull the band so that it's tight around your wrist. Count how many excess links are on the watchband. Remove the watch.

2.Remove the watch face from the band. Lay the watch flat and mark the number of links that need to be removed with a marker. Choose links that are near the center of the watchband.

3.Expand the section of band where the links will be removed. Depending on the brand of watch you have, the links will be separated in one of two ways. Watchbands that have links with tabs that bend over the end of the link need to have the tab straightened out on one side of the first link to be removed. Turn it over and straighten out the tab on the top side. On watchbands without the tab, carefully pull out the U shaped hook that holds the links together. Make sure not to twist the pin. Like the tab, only remove the hook from one side of the first link. Save the hook. Use a pair of needle nose pliers to do this for both styles of watchbands.

4.Slide the links apart. There will still be one tab or pin that hasn't been removed from the link so slide the links away from that end. As you slide the watchband apart, the staples within the tabbed band will disengage.

5.Repeat the previous two steps on the last link in the section that's being removed. Discard the removed section.

6.Slide the two remaining ends of the watchband back together. Listen for the click in the tabbed band as the internal stables reengage.

7.Fold the tabs back down into place on the tabbed watchband. Insert the U shaped hook back into the pinned watchband. Listen for the click as the hook locks into place, securing the links back together.

How to Change Clip Earrings Into Pierced

Perhaps you inherited a pair of clip-back earrings from a relative or found a fabulous pair while vintage shopping, but you don't like the pressure the tight clips exert on your ear when you wear them. Instead of wearing the earrings as clips, convert them to pierced earrings to enhance your comfort.

1.Remove the clip from the back of the earring with jeweler's or needle-nose pliers. Grip the folding part of the clip and remove it, as well as any other parts left behind. Take care when prying the clip away from the back of the earring so you won't damage it.

2.Rub a piece of fine grit sandpaper across the area where you removed the clip to add some texture to the earring back.

3.Remove the backing from a self-adhesive earring post and apply it to the area from which you removed the clip, or apply a drop or two of epoxy glue to the back of a non-adhesive post and apply it to the area.

4.Allow to dry for 24 hours or the amount of time recommended by the glue manufacturer, if you used glue to adhere the post to the earring back.

Watch Band Repair Tips

A good watch is not just a purchase, it is an investment. A good watch should not only last a lifetime, but it should last beyond you, so that you can pass it down with pride. Although a well-made watch will last for a long time with regular maintenance, sometimes you cannot avoid a broken watch band. A watch band is fairly easy to fix with the right knowledge and tools.

Tools
Before repairing your watch band, make sure you have the right tools. It does not help the repair by using tools not suitable for the job. To repair a watch band, you will need a ban pin pusher plier set, a bracelet pin remover base, a pin punch set, a watchmaker's hammer and screwdriver set, and possibly a knife. Sometimes you need only a screwdriver and a watchmaker's knife, but the tools listed are the bare minimum for professional watch band repair. All these materials can be bought from watch repair shops, craft stores and on the Internet.

Leather Bands
If your leather band has snapped, or is worn, you may wish to replace it. Some leather watches come with a pin called "Easy Fit". These pins do not require any tools to replace the band. These bands are convenient, but you can only buy a band that has a pin that fits your watch; you cannot replace the pin with a smaller or larger size. When replacing a leather band, it is better to buy a band that is a little bit tight, as opposed to being loose. Leather bands relax over time and will fit better with some use. You can determine the size of the strap by finding the manufacturer's number on it, and referencing that against a millimeter measurement between the lugs to get the pin size.

Metal Bands
Check to see if your metal watch band can be removed from your watch. Some manufacturers bond the metal band to the watch itself, and can only be replaced with materials from the manufacturer. Some metal bands have pins that hold the links together, while others have screws. If the metal band has a screw type, be incredibly careful as replacing these screws if lost or damaged can be difficult. When removing a screw from a metal band, make sure you are using the correct size screwdriver. Using too large or too small a screwdriver can damage the head of the screw, making it impossible to remove from the band. If the band is held together by pins, you can use a pin removal tool to push out the pins and put them back in. This tool is great to use if you are resizing a band.

How to Find a Replacement Watch Band

It's happened to many of us. You put on your favorite watch one morning and alas: The band breaks. Well, don't worry. Replacing that watch band--whether you wear an heirloom timepiece or a state-of-the-art chronometer--is easier than you think. With some research and due diligence, you'll be keeping time again without skipping a beat.

1.Contact your local watchmaker. Yes, there is a watchmaker near you--you need only look. It's true that most watchmakers today are repairmen, but their antique trade name lives on. Your local watchmaker likely has access to innumerable replacement watch bands that can be delivered by suppliers around the world. Even if your watch is one of a rare breed or one that has been handed down over generations, your area watchmaker is likely to be able to locate a replacement. It may not be an original, but time will march on nonetheless.

2.Visit places where watches are sold. There are countless examples of replacement watch bands at local department stores or jewelers. This option is likely to be most effective for those looking to replace the band of a more modern timepiece. With the right tools and a little patience, you may be able to replace your watchband yourself. If you're not in the fix-it frame of mind, your local department store or jeweler can probably do it for you, or sell you the hardware to take to the watchmaker.

3.Search for a replacement online. Whether your watch is new or old, numerous websites offer replacement watch parts, and watch bands are no exception. It is advisable to email or call watch part vendors before completing your purchase to make sure you've chosen the right replacement part for your watch. In addition, try to stick with a reputable company that has customer references available, to ensure you get a fair deal and the right watch band delivered in a reasonable time frame.

How to Fit a Fossil Watch

You might not have a clue how to fit a Fossil watch, even though the tag on the watchband says “Sizing Made Simple.” Unlike most metal watchbands, Adjust-O-Link or Smart Link Fossil watches are designed so that the friction pins in the watchband are removable from either side. This is why Fossil advertises “Sizing Made Simple,” although fitting them isn’t so simple. It is important to properly fit the Fossil watch, since some won’t work correctly when worn too loose.

1.Place the Fossil watch on your wrist. Pinch the watchband around your wrist to see how many links are necessary for a proper fit. The excess links that aren't pinched are dangling and easily identified for removal.

2.Make a mental note about how many links you need to remove or mark the unnecessary links in some way. Take off the watch.

3.Read the instructions on how to use the watchband pin removing tool. Place the tool on a flat and steady surface.

4.Loosen the set screw that secures the vise pin in place. Insert the vise pin into the watchband pin press tool.

5.Tighten the set screw so that it secures the vise pin in place. Place the watchband onto the spring-loaded pad of the watchband pin press, so that the pin hole of the link you’re going to remove is lined up with the pin of the vise pin press.

6.Turn the knob of the pin press slowly, so that the vise pin is pushing straight into the friction pin in the watchband.

7.Continue pushing the vise pin until it is at its maximum reach into the watchband. Finish removing the friction pin with a pair of precision-tip needle-nose pliers, carefully pulling it straight out without bending.

8.Remove the link from the Fossil watchband. Repeat this process if you need to remove more than one link.

9.Line up the holes of the links to be put back together, so that the friction pin goes straight in without bending. Push the friction pin by hand part of the way into the links.

10.Return the watchband to the pin press when you have enough clearance between the partially inserted friction pin and the vise pin. Use the pin press to finish pushing the friction pin into the links. The watch is now fitted.

How to Take Links Off a Fossil Watch

Fossil watches, founded in 1984, focuses on creating innovative and affordable timepieces. Fossil has focused itself on becoming a nationally known brand, and Fossil watches can be found across the United States at many different retailers. Removing a link from a Fossil watch requires special tools and instructions, but can certainly be done at home.

1.Inspect the links closest to the watch buckle. If the narrow edge of the link contains a pin, move to step 2. If it contains a small screw head, move to section 2.

2.Place the soft cloth under the watch to prevent damage while working on the band.

3.Locate the arrows engraved on the underside of the band. These indicate the proper direction to push the pins.

4.Push the pin out of the band using the small driving tool (a push pin will work). Pull the pin from the other side of the link once it is partway out.

5.Repeat step 4, removing all needed links. Alternate sides of the band while removing, to balance the watch.

6.Close the band by joining the remaining band with the buckle using one of the removed pins. Push it in the opposite direction than the arrow.

7.Place the soft cloth under the watch to prevent damage while working on the band.

8.Locate the small screw heads in the removable links, on the narrow edge of each link.

9.Use the small screwdriver to remove the screw. If the screw will turn but not loosen, use the second screwdriver to hold the opposite side of the link steady.

10.Repeat step 3, removing all needed links. Alternate sides of the band while removing, to balance the watch.

11.Close the band by joining the remaining band with the buckle using one of the removed screws.

How to Resize a Fossil Watch

Purchasing a watch that is the correct size is difficult if you do not try it on. Certain situations, like purchasing the watch online or receiving the watch as a gift, prohibit you from this opportunity. If you receive a watch that is too large, you can have it adjusted. Fossil watches are so easy to adjust that you can make the size adjustment yourself. Jewelry stores and all purpose retail stores, both online and physical locations, often sell watch repair tool kits so you can safely adjust your watch.

1.Unscrew the screw/pin from the buckle using a small screwdriver from your watch repair tool kit, and push it out from the opposite side. This will separate the buckle from the bracelet.

2.Take out the metal retainer. The metal retainer was previously held in place by the screw/pin.

3.Remove links and metal sleeves until the bracelet is the appropriate length for your wrist. A screw/pin holds each link in place, inside the metal sleeve.

4.Reattach the buckle, replacing the metal retainer and screw/pin.Strap

5.Open the outer buckle of the watch.

6.Turn the watch over in your hand so that you are viewing the inside of the watchband.

7.Tug on the strap until the metal tongue opens.

8.Pull the strap until you reach a hole that makes the watchband the appropriate length.

9.Push the metal tongue inside the hole, securing the position of the strap.

Hazards of Tungsten Carbide

The most frequently utilized hard metal in manufacturing today, tungsten carbide, is used to make a wide variety of products, including wedding rings, golf clubs and machinery.Tungsten carbide is favored by manufacturers because it is strong, durable and heat tolerant. It is made primarily of tungsten and cobalt and small amounts of other metals such as nickel. Workers exposed to airborne tungsten particles do not appear to have any adverse health effects, but exposure to airborne cobalt particles can have a serious impact on health.

Eye and Skin Irritation
When the eyes and skin are exposed to tungsten carbide, the result is irritation. In addition, repeated exposure can result in allergies to tungsten carbide, as well as to nickel and cobalt.

Respiratory Ailments
Inhalation of tungsten carbide dust can lead to nose, throat and lung irritation. Repeated exposure to tungsten carbide can lead to a range of serious respiratory ailments including asthma, pulmonary fibrosis and hard-metal lung disease.

Organ Problems
When tungsten carbide is swallowed, it can lead to loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. The China Tungsten Industry Association states that "reports outside the [tungsten carbide] industry suggest that ingestion of significant amounts of cobalt has the potential for causing blood, heart and other organ problems."

Reducing Exposure
When working with tungsten carbide, you can reduce your exposure by wearing clothing that covers your skin, including gloves and safety glasses; wearing a respirator or working in a well-ventilated area; cleaning work areas using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter or other system that removes small particles from surfaces and the air; and always washing skin that has been exposed to tungsten carbide thoroughly.

Engraving of Tungsten Steel Rings

If you purchase a tungsten steel ring you will be getting an extremely durable and strong accessory. Aside from the difficulty in resizing these rings though is the difficulty in engraving them once the metal has fully set. Due to the solid nature of tungsten steel jeweler's need special tools to engrave this jewelry. Because this process is quite expensive though most tungsten steel rings are either ordered specifically with engravings (the engravings can be done more easily before the metal is fully set) or people will wear plain tungsten steel bands.
