It is not always easy to tell the difference between a real gold ring and a fake one, or a gold ring that is of lower quality than it is presented to be. Many myths circulate concerning this topic. While the most accurate way to discern real gold from fake gold is to take the ring to a jeweler, it is possible to avoid being scammed with just a little common knowledge.

1.Scratch the gold ring in an unnoticeable spot, using a file. While wearing rubber gloves, take a plastic stick dipped in nitric acid to the spot that was scratched. Rinse everything with water.

2.Observe the metal's reaction after the nitric acid solution has been rinsed. If there is no reaction whatsoever, the ring is gold. If the metal turns a bright green color,the ring is metal containing no gold. If there is a slight green tint, you most likely have a gold-plated ring. 3.Purchase a gold-testing kit at a jeweler supply store. It should contain a stone, aqua regia, nitric acid and karat samples. You will need all those items to complete the testing.

4.Rub the gold against the stone that is provided in the gold-testing kit. Place a karat sample next to the piece of jewelry that you are testing. Apply nitric acid or aqua regia to the affected spot. When both samples match, you have gold that is of the same quality karat as the samples you are testing. Nitric acid is used for gold of a low karat quality, while aqua regia is used for higher standards of gold.

When you buy jewelry and want the real deal, it's good to be able to tell if a necklace is fake gold or the real thing.

1.Gather your gold necklaces you want to identify to see if they are fake gold. Also,get a magnifying glass or a jeweler's loupe to look at each necklace closely.

2.Read the markings on gold jewelry. Necklaces and bracelets made from gold are marked according to purity. Locate the markings to determine if they are gold or fake.

The following marks are used to indicate the percent of gold content of jewelry:

24K: Pure gold
18K: About 75% gold
14K: About 59% gold
10K: About 42% gold

3.In a well lit area, look on your gold necklace near the clasp for a small metal tag.This tag should be oval or rectangle and be the same gold color as the necklace chain and clasp.

Use a magnifying glass or loupe and carefully look at both sides of the tag. It will be marked with the gold's karat marking. The mark can be 10K, 14K, 18K, or 24K or a decimal, such as .750 to indicate 75% or 18K.

4.On the tag, if the marks EP or GP are present, the necklace is plated, which means the necklace is not solid gold but plated with gold over another metal to reduce cost.

5.If you could not locate a marking, another way to tell if a necklace is fake gold is if the gold tarnishes. Look to see if the necklace has tarnished. If the gold appears dull and silver in color, that means it has tarnished and is fake.

Real gold does not tarnish. Plated gold necklaces can also chip or flake, and they can tarnish with time.

6.A final way to determine if your necklace is fake is to take it to a jeweler. The jeweler can do an acid test to determine the gold content.

Alloys of nearly every metal known have been encountered in jewellery. Bronze, for example, was common in Roman times. Modern fine jewellery usually includes gold, white gold, platinum, palladium, titanium, or silver. Most American and European gold jewellery is made of an alloy of gold, the purity of which is stated in karats, indicated by a number followed by the letter K. American gold jewellery must be of at least 10K purity (41.7% pure gold), (though in the UK the number is 9K (37.5% pure gold) and is typically found up to 18K (75% pure gold). Higher purity levels are less common with alloys at 22 K (91.6% pure gold), and 24 K (99.9% pure gold) being considered too soft for jewellery use in America and Europe.
