Types of Men's Wedding Bands

At one time men did not even wear wedding bands. Bands for the groom have now become customary in almost every wedding as of 2011, and it is important to choose the right one. Men's wedding bands differ from those of women; they are usually thicker and studier, with fewer decorative touches. There are four main materials from which to choose.

Gold Bands
Gold is the customary choice for a woman's wedding band, so it makes sense that it would be the most commonly chosen one for men as well. One reason for this is so that the bride and grooms' wedding bands match (to an extent). It also is fairly easy to change the size of a gold band should the groom put on a lot of weight later in life. Don't select a high carat band, since men are more likely to damage the softer metal.

Platinum and Silver Bands
Platinum looks like a light-colored silver. It is very hard, but it is also heaver than a similar sized silver or even gold ring. It is also much more costly than gold, and the groom might object to spending that much money on it. Silver is a less expensive choice than the others, but a silver wedding band has certain disadvantages. For example, it is very soft and easily scratched or damaged. It also rusts and tarnishes more quickly than the others, which means it will have to be cleaned frequently. On the other hand, it is easy to alter or adjust.

Titanium Bands
Titanium is a good choice for a men's wedding band because it is almost indestructible and very resistant to scratching. It is lightweight and is often used for military purposes like subs, jets and tanks, which gives it a certain macho appeal the groom might like. One problem with titanium is that it cannot be resized, so you will have a problem if the groom bulks up later. To address this, you might want to get it in a slightly larger size.

Tungsten Bands
Like titanium, tungsten is a hard metal that is very durable and scratch resistant. Tungsten bands have a darker gray-white color that has become more popular in the early 21st century for its modern look and cheaper price than gold and silver. However, some disadvantages to tungsten bands include the heavier weight of the metal and its inability to be resized.

The Most Durable Materials for Wedding Rings

When you get married and commit to spending the rest of your life with someone, you also commit to wearing the same ring every day. As such, it is important to choose rings that are both attractive and durable. Many people start shopping for wedding rings without any knowledge about how different metals hold up over time. Fifteen years later, they're back at the jewelry store to find a replacement ring because theirs became tarnished, damaged or broken. To avoid this outcome, take time to familiarize yourself with the benefits and drawbacks of wedding ring materials.

Titanium
Titanium has a slate grey or black coloration that many men like. It is resistant to corrosion, scratching and is hypoallergenic. As an added plus, it is quite light. This is an excellent option for men who work with their hands or do not enjoy wearing heavy rings. Titanium is quite cost-effective, usually selling for less than tungsten.

Tungsten
Tungsten is a popular choice for men's rings, largely because it is one of the most durable jewelry metals available. Tungsten comes in a variety of colors, including grey, silver or black. It is resistant to corrosion, scratching and is hypoallergenic. This makes it a good option for men who work with their hands a lot. However, tungsten rings cannot be re-sized and must be replaced if they become too large or small.

Gold
Gold is a favorite for wedding rings because of its intrinsic value and excellent durability. It is more widely available than other types of metals and can often be purchased at a lower cost. Sometimes, additional alloys are added to gold to make it stronger. These alloys can change the hue of the metal, giving you a wide range of options. If you are not a fan of the traditional yellow sheen of gold, consider white gold instead. It has a soft, silver color that can easily be mistaken for silver.

Platinum
Platinum is a lustrous white metal that is becoming increasing used for wedding rings. It is extremely durable, does not tarnish or wear down over time and is hypoallergenic. It provides a secure setting for diamonds or other rare stones and is an good alternative to silver.

Palladium
Palladium is very similar to platinum in both durability and appearance. It is a flexible, hypoallergenic metal that won't tarnish or wear thin over time. It has a silver-white hue that is only slightly darker than platinum. However, its lower density makes it significantly less expensive than platinum. Palladium is a good option for couples who want all the benefits of platinum on a budget.

What Is the Difference Between Tungsten Rings & Stainless Steel Rings?

Tungsten rings and stainless steel rings are both cost-effective alternatives to the more expensive gold and platinum selections. However, there are differences between them to keep in mind depending on your needs and budget.

Durability
Tungsten and stainless steel rings both resist fading, rust and corrosion. Neither metal will stain the body. Tungsten is a much heavier metal than stainless steel, and is therefore stronger and harder to scratch. However, stainless steel is durable enough to hold up to daily wear with proper care.

Style and Finish
Both types of rings can be given a variety of styles and finishes. Due to its superior strength, a tungsten ring's polish and finish will outlast that of a stainless steel ring.

Sizing Options
Neither type of ring can be resized. Tungsten rings are readily available in most sizes, even in hard-to-find half sizes. It can be more difficult to find the right size in the desired style of stainless steel ring.

Financial Considerations
Costs for both types of rings can vary widely, but stainless steel is less expensive. A 2010 search on Amazon.com found an 8mm flat band tungsten ring for $29.95 and a comparable sterling silver ring for $5.22. At the national jewelry retailer Zales, a sterling ring went for $119, and a comparable tungsten ring was just under $280.

Conclusion
While a tungsten ring is the better choice if you need a virtually indestructible band, stainless steel is a more economical option that will still last.

About Tungsten Carbide Jewelry

Tungsten carbide provides a durable, lasting option for your jewelry purchase. Because of its ability to sustain wear and tear, tungsten carbide has become a popular metal for wedding rings.

What is Tungsten Carbide?
Tungsten carbide is a durable metal that can be permanently polished to maintain a new appearance for years to come.

Cost
Tungsten carbide is typically a much less expensive alternative than other metals such as platinum and gold.

Shaping
Because the hardness of tungsten carbide, jewelry made from this metal will not bend or lose its shape.

Shine and Luster
Tungsten carbide jewelry has, and maintains, as much shine and luster as other popular jewelry metals.

Care
Water and a mild soap can be used to clean your tungsten carbide jewelry. Do not use chemicals or a jewelry-cleaning machine, as this may cause damage or discoloration.

How to Determine If Tungsten Carbide Contains Cobalt

Tungsten carbide is a common term used when discussing jewelry. However, tungsten carbide is used in a wide range of manufacturing processes. In many cases, tungsten carbide contains cobalt. Cobalt contains nickel and chromium. According to the New Jersey government website, these chemicals can increases the chances of severe asthma and "hard metal lung" disease. The average employee working with tungsten carbide does not have access to the testing equipment necessary to test for cobalt. However, thanks to government regulations, there is one way you can determine of the tungsten carbide you work with has cobalt in it.

1.Locate the packaging for all tools that use hardened metal tips such as end-mills, drill bits, cutters and saw blades.

2.Read the labels on the packaging. If the packaging indicates the tips of these tools are hardened carbide, they have cobalt mixed in with the alloy. As you use these tools, they wear down and create dust contaminated with cobalt.

3.Locate the packaging for any tungsten carbide raw materials. All raw materials have a "material safety data sheet." The MSDS must indicate all of the ingredients used in the manufacturer of the raw materials. If the carbide has cobalt in it, it is listed on the MSDS.

Tungsten Carbide Ring and Titanium Ring

Titanium is one of the toughest, hardest and most durable metals. Titanium is even a little harder than stainless steel ("6" hardness rating) but it is not harder than tungsten carbide. Just like with silver, gold, platinum and stainless steel, titanium is more ductile than tungsten carbide. Stainless steel rings are around 43 percent heavier than titanium rings, which mean tungsten carbide rings are considerably heavier than titanium rings. Basic titanium rings are linked with price tags that are similar to tungsten carbide ring price tags.

Tungsten Carbide Ring and Stainless Steel Ring

Many rings are made from durable stainless steel. Stainless steel is one of the harder metals available but it is still not harder than tungsten carbide. Stainless steel offers a hardness value of "6" on the Moh's scale of hardness. Stainless steel is also more ductile than tungsten carbide. It might take quite a bit of pressure, but a stainless steel ring will still bend rather than shatter. Tungsten carbide rings are about 90 percent heavier than stainless steel rings. This might make it a more attractive choice for consumers in the market for a heavier ring. Stainless steel rings are usually relatively cheap, tungsten carbide rings are generally more expensive than stainless steel rings.

Tungsten Carbide Ring and Platinum Ring

Many rings and wedding bands are constructed out of platinum, which is also a precious metal. While platinum is harder than silver and gold, tungsten carbide is much harder than platinum. Platinum only offers a maximum hardness rating of around "4" on the Moh's hardness scale. Platinum is also very ductile; a ring made out of platinum will bend under high pressures. Platinum rings are some of the most expensive rings on the market, they are usually much more expensive than tungsten carbide rings.

Tungsten Carbide Ring and Gold Ring

Gold is a very popular precious metal used in the creation of rings and wedding bands. Tungsten carbide is harder than gold. While gold offers a hardness rating of "3" on the Moh's metal hardness scale, tungsten carbide offers a "9" hardness rating out of 10. Gold is more ductile than tungsten carbide. Ductility refers to a material's ability to bend under pressure. Gold will bend and warp under pressure, unlike tungsten carbide, which does not bend under pressure. Tungsten carbide rings shatter under pressure. This property might be very attractive to a consumer who is concerned with a ring holding its shape. Tungsten carbide rings are generally cheaper than gold rings.

How are Tungsten Rings Made?

Ground tungsten and carbon are poured into a metal die cube containing a ring mold. The mold is subjected to high pressure to push the powder together into a solid ring blank. The blank is then fired in an oxygen-powered furnace at temperatures exceeding 6,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Only at this obscenely high temperature will the blank's component elements intermingle and solidify as one. Once cooled, any burs or extra metal is removed with high-powered diamond edged saws. Diamond powdered files and sanders are then used to polish the ring until it shines. With this done the ring is ready to be worn. It should be noted that since such rings cannot be re-sized, each one must be constructed to order if it's to be a perfect fit.
