Cleaning fake jewelry is tricky because the exact make of the piece is typically unknown. While it is easy to distinguish that the piece is not gold, it is more difficult to determine if it is gold plated, iron pyrite (fool's gold) or some other metal. The same goes for faux gemstones. This can become a problem because what may be okay for one type of stone or metal can damage another. For that reason, do not attempt the techniques listed here on any antique pieces. Instead, check with a jewelry dealer about cleaning it. The two methods listed here are ones that are believed to be safe for most types of fake jewelry. However, you should test the method on a small portion of the jewelry before using it on the entire piece.
.Mix 1/2 tablespoon dish washing detergent or Woolite with a glass of warm water. Do not use hot water.
.Dip the toothbrush into the soap water.
.Gently brush the jewelry with the toothbrush to loosen the dirt.
.Rinse the jewelry well with water.
.Use a hair dryer to dry the piece. You can use a towel, but a dryer will ensure that all the water is removed. Make sure you put it on a low setting.
.Check any stones with a tweezers to see if they have become loose. Cleaning can sometimes dissolve the glue or loosen the prongs holding the stones.
.Place the jewelry in a small bowl with vinegar.
.Swish the jewelry around the bowl for a few seconds.
.Remove the jewelry from the vinegar. Do not allow it to soak.
.Put some baking soda on the toothbrush.
.Gently rub the baking soda onto the jewelry to remove dirt.
.Rinse the jewelry in water.
.Check any stones with a tweezers to see if they have become loose and dry them thoroughly with a towel or hair dryer.
