In 1970s, it was discovered that hydrocarbons could react with hydrogen on tungsten carbide, tungsten carbide is used as a catalyst for some organic reactions.
Because of its surface electronic properties similar to platinum and therefore used as a catalyst instead of platinum. Tungsten carbide can catalyze the decomposition reaction of hydrazine, indicating that tungsten carbide catalyst has a good application prospect in the space field. Hydrazine is a liquid fuel used in rocket propulsion, in production it needs to use a catalyst containing iridium, but iridium is very expensive, so some scholars began experimenting with tungsten carbide to catalyze the decomposition of hydrazine, an international group of researchers specializing in rocket propulsion made by chemists and engineers in Brazil, France, Germany, and the United States. After the conversion of tungsten carbide as catalyst to decompose hydrazine, it was found that tungsten carbide had better performance than supported iridium catalyst.
In addition, fuel cells that generate fuel by oxidation of hydrogen and methanol have been extensively studied as a promising new source of energy, but this fuel cell needs to be made of platinum as a metal oxide electrode, and it is increasingly urgent to find an efficient and economical alternative material. Therefore, some scholars have studied the feasibility of replacing tungsten with noble metals as catalysts for methanol fuel cells, tungsten carbide plays an important catalytic role in the electrochemical oxidation of hydrogen, methanol and formaldehyde. The increase of the concentration of WC active center on the surface of tungsten carbide can enhance the catalytic activity in the electrochemical oxidation of hydrogen, methanol and formaldehyde, there is no problem in replacing platinum electrodes.
In the near future, more new energy vehicles will be fitted with this type of battery, but thanks to a series of new materials such as tungsten carbide applications, the price will be more close to the people.
