Tungsten carbide cylindrical milling cutter, with its teeth located on the cutter circumference, is classified into the straight tooth cutter and the end mill with spiral teeth according to its tooth shapes, while into the coarse-tooth milling cutter and the fine-tooth milling cutter according to its teeth number. The coarse-tooth milling cutter with spiral teeth has fewer teeth but with high intensity and larger chip space, and thus is suitable for roughing machining. The fine-tooth milling cutter, on the contrary, is more suitable for finish machining.

The milling characteristics of tungsten carbide cylindrical milling cutter are as follows:

I. The cutter rotates continuously and allows relatively high milling speed which contributes to its high productivity.

II. When doing continuous rotation, every cutter tooth is rotating, therefore, vibration is inevitable. In addition, during high-speed milling, the teeth have to suffer from periodic thermal shock, which can easily result in cracks forming and blade tipping.

III. Because there are many cutter teeth, the total length of the cutting edge is actually quite large, which helps improve tool service life and productivity.

IV. According to different machining conditions, different milling ways can be adopted in order to extend tool life and improve productivity, such as up milling,climb milling, symmetric milling and asymmetry milling.
