Improved Process for Preparing Nano Tungsten Carbide

Tungsten carbide is the main raw material for the manufacture of cemented carbide products, and its particle size has a decisive influence on the properties of cemented carbide products. The preparation of nano tungsten carbide has become the main way to improve the strength and toughness of cemented carbide products.

Nano-tungsten carbide is easy to agglomerate in the synthesis process, resulting in grain growth and grain growth in the sintering process, which makes it difficult to obtain carbide particles less than 100 nanometers and cemented carbide products with nano-tungsten carbide particles by traditional process.

To this end, the researchers solved this problem through process improvement. The process of the process is mainly through:

(1)Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and tungsten powder were added into ethanol solution at the weight ratio of 1:3 to 30 and dispersed by ball milling in a ball mill to make the CNTs and tungsten powder mix evenly.

(2)Filtrating the dispersed solution of carbon nanotubes and tungsten powder, then vacuum drying and drying the powder into high temperature carbonization furnace, heating up to 1000 1500, holding for 3 20 hours under argon protection, the surface atoms of carbon nanotubes react with tungsten to form tungsten carbide. The inner layer keeps the original structure of carbon nanotubes and forms a micro-composite material with tungsten carbide inner layer as carbon nanotubes.

The tungsten carbide layer with several to dozens of atomic layer thickness was formed on the surface of the carbon nanotubes by the reaction of carbon nanotubes and tungsten. The inner layer of the tungsten carbide layer remained the fibrous structure of the original carbon nanotubes. The diameter of the tungsten carbide nanoparticles could be controlled to 10_100 nm. The tungsten carbide nanoparticles prepared by the process not only maintained the high hardness of tungsten carbide, but also maintained the high strength and toughness of the carbon Tungsten composite completely solves the contradiction between strength and hardness of cemented carbide products. It can be used to manufacture high strength, toughness, high hardness cemented carbide products and wear resistant coatings of various materials and equipment.
