Silver tungsten bar is used for electrical contacts. Typically they are used in heavy duty devices subject to high currents. The presence of the refractory material tungsten reduces the chances of welding and improves resistance to arc erosion. Optimal compositions are found by balancing conductivity and non-welding properties.

Silver tungsten bar-AgW75 is one of the high refractory content tungsten-silver materials made by press-sinter-infiltration and normally a high resistance to arc erosion. It is generally used as arcing contacts in large air and oil circuit breakers, line disconnects, re-closures, and in high current switches and contactors. Contact resistance is low enough to protect the higher conductivity current carrying contacts from arc damage. Its resistance to welding makes it a good shorting contact for bimetal protection in circuit breakers.

Silver tungsten bar AgW70 and silver tungsten bar-AgW50 have more silver than Silver tungsten bar-AgW75, which provides higher conductivity and a lower contact resistance. They are used extensively in a large variety of circuit breakers. In this application, a single pair of contacts provides the dual function of carrying the current without overheating, and interrupting the current without excessive arc erosion. They are also used in high current contactors where resistance to contact welding and arc erosion are required. In a variety of DC applications, they offer resistance to metal transfer.  

Silver tungsten bar-AgW50 has the highest silver content of the press-sinter-repress tungsten-silver materials. It exhibits good resistance to contact welding and is used for current carrying contacts in power circuit breakers that encounter high momentary currents.

Because of the high electrical conductivity and low consumption, copper tungsten bars are widely used to make grid siderod, lead, support, and electrode for the gas discharge lamp.

1. Resistance welding electrode

It integrates such features of tungsten and copper as high temperature resistance, electrical arc ablation resistance, high proportion, good electrical and heat conductivity, being easy to cut and transpiration cooling. It also owns such advantages of tungsten as high hardness, melting point and adherence resistance. It is often used for projection welding and butt-welding electrode with wear and high temperature resistance.

2. Electric spark electrode

It is used for the electrode of mould made from tungsten steel and high-temperature and ultra hard alloy. The common electrode has high consumption and low rate. The high electrical ablation rate, low consumption ratio, precise electrode size and quality processing performance of Copper tungsten can ensure that the precision of the work piece is greatly enhanced.

3. High-voltage discharge tube electrode

When the high-voltage vacuum discharge tube is working, the temperature of contact material will rise to thousands degree centigrade within several tenths seconds. High ablation resistance, high toughness, good electrical and heat conductivity of Copper tungsten provide necessary conditions to stable operation of the discharge tube.

What is copper tungsten bar?

Copper tungsten bar is a combination of tungsten and copper. The manufacturing process is as follows: press the refractory metal, sinter the pressed compact at a high temperature, and infiltrate it with copper. All this is done under very closely controlled conditions.

The result is a relatively hard material with superior arc and wear resistance, high physical Properties: at elevated temperatures, and good electrical and thermal conductivity.
