Preparation:
Materials deburred on edges;
Holes laid out in correct locations, taking into account pitch and edge distance requirements
Holes centre-punched using a backing plate to avoid sheet distortion;
Parts assembled securely together and supported while being drilled with a sharpened bit of the correct size. Holes drilled squarely tosurrounding surface.
Parts disassembled and holes deburred;
Holes dimpled or countersunk if accepting AN 426 Flush head rivets.
Parts reassembled and clecoed;
Selection of new AN rivets of correct diameter and length;
Assembly well secured in a vice, a jig or on a workboard.

Bucking bars are tools used to form bucktails (thehead formed during riveting operations) on rivets.They come in many different shapes and sizes, asshown in the following picture.
Bucking bars are normallymade from an alloy steel similar to tool steel. Theparticular shape to be used depends upon the locationand accessibility of the rivet to be driven. The size and weight of the bar depend on the size and alloy ofthe rivet to be driven. Under certain circumstances,and for specific rivet installations, specially designedbucking bars are manufactured locally. These barsare normally made from tool steel. The portion of thebar designed to come in contact with the rivet has apolished finish.This helps to prevent marring offormed bucktails. Bucking-bar faces must be keptsmooth and perfectly flat and the edges and cornersrounded.
NOTE: Never hold a bucking bar in a viseunless the vise jaws are equipped withprotective covers to prevent marring of thebucking bar.
A satisfactory rivet installation depends largelyon the condition of the bucking bar and your ability touse it.If possible, hold the bucking bar in such amanner that will allow the longest portion of the bar tobe in line with the rivet. You should hold the buckingbar lightly but firmly against the end of the rivet shankso as not to unseat the rivet head. The inertia of thistool provides the force that bucks (upsets) the rivetand forms a flat, headlike bucktail.

Tungsten Heavy Alloy bucking bars are resulting in a bucking bar of the same weight but half the size. Bucking bars are used in rivet setting to upset the shank of the rivet. Tungsten Heavy Alloy bucking bars reduce the recoil when reflecting the impact back to the rivet shaft.
In normal use, bucking bars experience considerable stress. Bucking bars are designed to provide a heavy and hard surface to support the rivet when the rivet gun delivers its impulse force. If the metal alloy is too soft, the bucking bar will wear quickly or not provide the necessary assembly support. Alternatively, if the metal alloy is too hard and brittle, the bucking bar will fracture easily. Our tungsten metal alloys are designed especially for bucking bar applications.

Higher density reduces vibration and kick back while bucking. Take a cue from the pros and use what they use. We carry a full line of standard bars and can custom build bars to your specifications. All bars have smooth faces and rounded edges and corners for ease and safety in handling.
According to the investigation for different bucking bars of the same shape but different materials and mass characteristics, use of heavier but same sized tungsten bucking bars can reduce vibration transmission to the hand.
In a word, tungsten bucking bars are VERY useful for bucking rivets and will make your life much easier in the build process.
