Hundreds come together for largest Midwest Dart Tournament

The Midwest Dart Tournament took over Sioux City this weekend with more than 600 players from all over the Midwest.

They played in a variety of events including singles, doubles and teams.

"Hotels are sold out," said River City Amusement general manager and league coordinator Ace Leiding. "It's a tremendous boost to the local economy and they play in many different events."

Leiding says this year's tournament is the largest in its 23 year history.

Some participants say they like to participate every year for the love of shooting darts.

"It's more of whether you're going to relax and whether you're going to release that dart tournament just right, to where you can release the next dart tournamentjust right," said Sioux Falls, South Dakota resident Tellis Capell Jr.Some players say they enjoy being able to spend time with friends during the event.

"You always don't get to see your buddies out all the time," said Sioux City resident Blake Barker. "So it's nice to get everyone and in a group. See them, say hi, how you doing. How you playing?"

Players were put in divisions with similar skill levels.

About $20,000 in cash was awarded throughout the competition.

Leiding says the tournament will be returning to Sioux City again next year.

He says he hopes the turnout will be even larger than this year's.
