Enlargement of the EU Commission rare tungsten, rare earth and other raw materials species range

Recently, the European Commission released a list of the latest issue of critical raw materials, the list of species covered by the scope expanded from 14 kinds to 20 kinds, namely: antimony, beryllium, borate, chromium, cobalt, coke, fluorspar, gallium , germanium, indium, magnesite, magnesium, natural graphite, niobium, platinum group metals, phosphate rock, heavy rare earths, light rare earths, silicon metal, tungsten.

Reported that the EU select the type of key raw materials have two major considerations: economic importance and supply risk. 2010 the European Commission to define ad hoc working group of key raw materials, from the EU's point of view, the selection of the 14 categories of key raw materials from 41 categories of non-energy, non-food raw materials. In 2011 the European Commission formally adopted the list, and a statement of key raw materials continue to monitor the issue, then at least once every three years to update the list of critical raw materials. This evaluation will range from 41 class alternative raw materials to expand to 54 classes. The main changes in the new issue of inventory compared with the original list are: First, the rare earths are divided into two categories: light rare earths and heavy rare earths; Second, tantalum out of the list; Third added six kinds of key raw materials: beryllium, boric acid salt, coke, magnesite, phosphate rock and metal silicon. Reported that the global supply system, monitoring and evaluation of raw materials are 54 classes in about 90% originating in non-EU regions, China is an important supplier of many raw materials. In the 20 kinds of key raw materials, in the global supply of Chinese products has an important impact on 14 species, individual country occupies an important position in the other specific types of supplies. For example, in the global supply of niobium from Brazil accounted for 92% of beryllium from the United States accounted for 90%.

Commission to define ad hoc working group of key raw materials made a number of recommendations, including taking into account the risk of key economic importance and supply of raw materials, the initiative to take the necessary action to ensure that the EU can be a reliable and uninterrupted access to raw materials.
