Chinese Rare Earth Prices - October 13, 2023

After the National Day holiday, Chinese rare earth prices have shown a pattern of first rising, then declining, and stabilizing again.

At the beginning of the week, many holders tentatively increased their prices due to factors such as increased market inquiries, the month-on-month increase in Northern Rare Earth's listed prices this month, and an upward adjustment of rare earth concentrate trading prices for the fourth quarter by the company. However, towards the end of the week, supplier prices were adjusted rationally due to persistently weak downstream demand.

As per information from China Tungsten Online, the current price of praseodymium and neodymium oxide has increased by approximately 11,000 CNY per ton compared to the period before the National Day, marking an increase of 2.12%. The price of praseodymium and neodymium metal has increased by about 10,000 CNY per ton, indicating a rise of 1.54%. Dysprosium oxide prices have decreased by about 50 CNY per kilogram, resulting in a decrease of 0.58%. Dysprosium oxide prices have increased by about 10,000 CNY per ton, reflecting a rise of 0.37%. The price of 55N neodymium iron boron ingots has increased by about 5 CNY per kilogram, marking a 2.00% increase. The price of neodymium iron boron ingot scrap (praseodymium and neodymium) has increased by about 14 CNY per kilogram, indicating a rise of 2.55%.

In terms of news, according to data from the China Rare Earth Industry Association, in the first half of 2023, the production of major rare earth functional materials remained steadily on the rise. In the field of rare earth magnetic materials, the production of sintered neodymium iron boron ingots reached 116,000 tons, marking a 15% increase compared to the same period last year. The production of bonded neodymium iron boron magnets was 4,490 tons, indicating a 2% increase compared to the same period last year. The production of samarium cobalt magnets was 1,490 tons, reflecting a 14.6% increase compared to the same period last year.

In the first half of 2023, in the field of rare earth catalytic materials, the production of petroleum catalytic cracking catalysts was 109,000 tons (excluding foreign-funded enterprises), marking a 4.4% decrease compared to the same period last year. The production of automotive tail gas purification catalysts was 9.75 million liters (excluding foreign-funded enterprises), indicating a 36.4% increase compared to the same period last year. In the area of rare earth luminescent materials, the production of LED phosphors was 289.5 tons, reflecting a 14.9% decrease compared to the same period last year. The production of three primary color phosphors was 360 tons, indicating a 13.9% decrease compared to the same period last year. The production of long-persistent phosphors was 120.5 tons, marking a 5.9% decrease compared to the same period last year. The production of rare earth hydrogen storage materials was 4,398 tons, indicating a 13.4% decrease. The production of rare earth polishing materials was 16,000 tons, reflecting an 8.4% decrease compared to the same period last year.
