China’s APT Offers Were Firm with the Increase in Processing Costs

Analysis of latest tungsten market from Chinatungsten Online

China’s tungsten powder and ammonium paratungstate (APT) prices maintain stability on March 24, 2022. Under the Russia-Ukraine conflict, rising commodity price, inflation, economic and trade conflicts, the tungsten industry is facing pressure from rising costs, especially the increase in the cost of auxiliary materials in the chemical industry and the price of cobalt in the cemented carbide industry. 

Recently, the price of mainstream tungsten products has been adjusted upward to varying degrees. However, market trading is not active as intermediate traders and downstream manufacturers are cautious with the impact of cost pressure. 

In the tungsten concentrate market, out of consideration of environmental protection and safety requirements, control of total mining volume, scarcity and value of strategic resources, etc., the stockholders still hold a supportive attitude towards the market. Concentrate price hovers around $19,193.5/ton. 

In the APT market, the increase in processing costs of smelting enterprises stimulated the market sentiment, superimposed on the influence of overseas geopolitical and resource tensions, the smelter's APT offers were firm, and some were tried to rise to $333.5/mtu despite of no deals concluded. 

In the tungsten powder market, with the impact of strong raw material market and the price increase of back-end alloy products, the mentality of smelters and traders is generally strong. The short-term market remains stable at around $45.0/kg.
