Sion's Licerion EV Tech Promises Full-Charge Li-Metal Batteries in 15Mins

Charge Li-metal batteries to 100 percent of the state in just 15 minutes. US-based Sion Power, a leading developer in high-energy, lithium-metal rechargeable batteries demonstrated its patented-Licerion EV tech has been expanded to have a power capacity of 420 Wh/kg and 700Wh/L when it is commercially designed. Licerion EV is specifically designed for electric vehicle applications, focusing on high energy density, increased cycle life, and fast charging capability.

Sion Power tested the technology on a 1.8 Ah battery cell by optimizing its protected lithium anode (PLA) and advanced electrolyte formula. After 800 full depth of discharge cycles, the battery still maintained 70 percent of its capacity. Charge times of 15 minutes to 100 percent state of charge were repeatedly demonstrated with 99.7 percent efficiency.

Years of research and development have yielded the Licerion lithium metal technology which is poised to dramatically change the lithium battery landscape, delivering the highest combination of energy density and specific energy available. Sion Power plans to license its Licerion EV tech to the automotive sector, as well as specific markets, such as electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (eVTOL) and unmanned vehicles.

Sion, which initially focused on lithium-sulfur battery technology, shifted its strategy to focus on Li-metal batteries. The company has developed a patented technology-a Protected Lithium Anode (PLA), a key component that enables Licerion batteries to store energy at levels unachievable by other battery technologies.

Licerion EV tech of Sion Power uses thin and chemically stable ceramic barriers to reduce parasitic reactions and minimize the weight of Li-metal batteries while maximizing battery energy, extending its cycle life, and enhancing its safety. Besides, the company's proprietary electrolyte system additives further improve battery safety and extend battery cycle life.
