Mooncake Gambling or Lucky Dice Game or Bobing?

Rather than call it Mooncake Gambling or Gambling Cake, I would prefer to calling it Lucky Dice game or a direct "BOBING" where an English express is necessary. ----This is my first time to give a consideration on the translation of the game played during Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival (or Moon Festival).

The game named "BoBing" in Chinese pronuncitation denotes a pleasant game taken part in before/on the Mid-Auntumn Festival usually by a family or a group of related people where they cast dices trying to get the toppest award called "ZhuangYuan", but more oftenly achieving in minor ones.It is nervous but very happy for all the players, no matter children or adults. It is so common for Southeast Fujian people, and will be definitely popular as well for all Chinese people since now this cultural ceremony have been expanding smoothly all through China. But problem comes when we communicate with people outside China who dont's speak Chinese. We have to translate the game, first the name, into English at least. Shall we call it Gambling Cake, or similar Gambling Cake, as it denotes in a certain sense? If so, will the allien people say "Wow, you Chinese! you alaways like gambling! You've spent much time on Ma-jiong, ZhaJinHua (Poker gambling), Mark-Six, and now, you are still gambling on mooncakes! Stupid!":)? As a matter of fact, we Chinese people don't favor gambling more than other people in other countries. But the translation with "Gambling" has spoiled the least romance in this game and trigger a misunderstanding of Chinese tradition and culture.If ,however,we transliterate the game into "BOBING" keeping the most original mystery, how many foreign people can get an instant conception of it and recognize it next time?

This is not the fist dilema we might be encountered with where a translation is necessary for Chinese original culture factors. On the contrary, it have and will emerge more and more frequently as Chinese culture goes all over into every corner of the world. As an interesting example, when Chinese food JIAOZI got into the vision of foreigners for the first time (maybe through Japan), it was not able to be translated exactly in a familar linguistic form to western people without losing its real meaning. People thought of "Dumpling" or other epxressions, but finally, most of them surrendered to the orginal transliterated word "JIAOZI", although at first times they feel a little odd. There exist more such instances as "MANTOU" ,"LAMIAN"(through Japanese),DOUFU, etc. As a counterpart, we translate "Beer" into "PIJIU" instead of a competely native Chinese word, of which examples can be found in large quanity in Budism bibles.

So it seems that "BOBING" is not a bad translation for the game played by us in Mid-Autumn Festival, at least not worse than "Mooncake Gambling". Or " Lucky Dice Game" can be even a better alternative than the latter.Maybe non-Chinese-Speaking people may feel crazy at first sight, but anyway they will get used to it and come to like it, just as they would get accustomed to say aloud when they step into a Chinese restaurant:"LaoBan! A serve of GongBaoJiDing!" :)

As we know, Oct. 1 is a big deal to celebrate the foundation of the People's Republic of China. There will be a variety of grand ceremonies and activities, such as a great ceremonial review of troops and lighting fireworks in the evening. People will get a 7-day vacation which combines National Day holiday and two weekends on either side, which is the second longest vocation besides Spring Festival, so called “Golden Week”. Workers are available to visit their families or to travel around the country during such long holiday. All hotels, tourist attractions, trains, buses and airplanes around the country are completely packed with holidaying Chinese people.

World Grand Prix Draw

The 32-player event features the unique format of players needing to both begin and end every leg with a double, adding extra pressure throughout in Dublin.

Reigning champion Michael van Gerwen - who followed up his 2012 win by defeating James Wade in last year's final - will take on 2014 World Youth Champion Keegan Brown in their opening fixture.

World Champion Gary Anderson will face an all-Scottish first round tie with John Henderson, as the number two seed looks to better last year's run to the semi-finals at the Citywest Hotel.

Number four seed Peter Wright faces a tough first round opponent in Dave Chisnall, the 2013 World Grand Prix runner-up and current world number nine.

Number five seed Adrian Lewis will take on another former World Grand Prix finalist, Raymond van Barneveld, in another tasty tie, while two-time champion Wade is up against Austria's Mensur Suljovic.

Robert Thornton - who shared nine-darters with Wade in a historic second round tie last year - will play Northern Ireland's Daryl Gurney, while number eight seed Michael Smith has drawn Welsh debutant Gerwyn Price.

In-form Jelle Klaasen, who won Sunday's Players Championship in Barnsley, will meet Northern Irish star Brendan Dolan, a former World Grand Prix finalist who hit the event's first-ever double-start nine-darter in 2011.

Belgium's Kim Huybrechts takes on top Dutch youngster Benito van de Pas, Ireland's William O'Connor will meet Welshman Jamie Lewis and former Lakeside Champions Mark Webster and Stephen Bunting also clash.

Two former World Grand Prix finalists clash as Mervyn King meets Terry Jenkins - who celebrated his 52nd birthday with a Players Championship win on Saturday - while 2004 Dublin semi-finalist Steve Beaton drew Justin Pipe.

Australian star Simon Whitlock meets Andrew Gilding, while Ian White is up against Jamie Caven, who only booked his place in the World Grand Prix - at the expense of Joe Murnan - on the final weekend of Players Championship events ahead of the cut-off.

Brendan Dolan Backs Phil Taylor to Challenge for World Grand Prix Title

'The Power' is yet to collect a major title this year and his seven-year reign as World Matchplay champion ended in July after a semi-final defeat by James Wade.

But Taylor has fared well on previous trips to Dublin, winning the trophy on 11 occasions, including a 2011 final victory over Irishman Dolan, who believes the 55-year-old is still one of the main contenders to win the tournament.

"There's an 11-time champion who is not going to be far away, he never is," Dolan told Sky Sports.

"When it comes to Dublin, he has the mentality for it. He knows how to pressure people and probably even knows what people are thinking as soon as he starts.

"It would definitely be foolish to write him off. People say he's had a barren year, but he's proved it in the World Series of Darts, he's won two tournaments. He didn't win the World Championships or he hasn't won the Premier League this year, but he hasn't played much on the tour, so it isn't like he's getting beaten week-in-week-out."

Michael van Gerwen is the defending champion and current world No 1, but Dolan has spotted a few signs of weakness in recent weeks.

He said: "Michael had a great year on the floor up to the World Matchplay, but since then he's got beat a few times on the floor and is possibly more vulnerable.

"You have to consider other major winners like Gary Anderson or James Wade. James is playing very well at the minute. He's been there and done it before and I think he could be the outsider, apart from myself of course."

Players must start every leg on a double and Dolan earned the nickname of 'The History Maker' when he became the first man to complete a nine-darter in this format during his run to the final in 2011.

"To do the first ever nine-darter there is a special moment, in front of the Dublin crowd," said Dolan, who will face Jelle Klaasen on the opening night this Sunday.

"At the time it didn't mean as much, but now I can look back and appreciate what I actually achieved. To be the first person, it was very nice and rewarding to go down in the history books."
