Rare earth market update on September 9, 2025
The domestic rare earth market remains locally stable with minor adjustments, where the prices of praseodymium-neodymium metal and dysprosium-iron alloy both decreased by approximately 10,000 yuan per ton.
Influenced by the recent retreat of praseodymium-neodymium prices from their highs, prices of rare earth permanent magnet materials and their scrap have also declined, with the price of 55N neodymium-iron-boron blank blocks decreasing by about 1 yuan per kilogram and neodymium-iron-boron scrap (praseodymium-neodymium) decreasing by about 6 yuan per kilogram.
From the supply side, influenced by factors such as weak downstream demand, frequent high-temperature rainfall, high energy prices, and stricter environmental policies, the output of some rare earth manufacturers has decreased. Additionally, with limited imports of overseas rare earth products, the growth of market spot supply has slowed further. From the demand side, short-term demand remains low due to relatively high rare earth prices and some downstream enterprises having completed their phased procurement. However, in the long term, with the rapid development of industries such as new energy vehicles, wind power generation, and robotics, the demand for rare earths is expected to increase.
In terms of news, according to the National Bureau of Statistics, in August 2025, the Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) was 49.4%, increased by 0.1 percentage points from the previous month. By enterprise size, the PMI for large enterprises was 50.8%, increased by 0.5 percentage points from the previous month; the PMI for medium-sized enterprises was 48.9%, decreased by 0.6 percentage points from the previous month; and the PMI for small enterprises was 46.6%, increased by 0.2 percentage points from the previous month. From the classification indices, the production index was 50.8%, increased by 0.3 percentage points from the previous month; the new orders index was 49.5%, increased by 0.1 percentage points from the previous month; and the raw materials inventory index was 48.0%, increased by 0.3 percentage points from the previous month.
