How To Hold Your Dart!

One element of technique in a well thrown dart is grip - how you hold the dart with your fingers. Most players use a pencil grip, with the middle finger wedged between the front of the dart barrel and the base of the point. The dart is balanced on the thumb and held in place by the forefinger with this grip. This is a good way to grip a dart because it is easily repeatable, and anything that encourages automatic repetition will put you on the road to consistency.
That said, any grip that is easy to repeat and fosters a clean release of the dart as it leaves the fingers would work. A firm, but relaxed grip will also keep the dart parallel with the floor, and pointed at the dartboard. When the dart leaves your fingers, it has a much better chance of finding it's target if it's already pointed on a straight line to the dartboard. If the dart is pointed down, or to the side because of the grip, the drag of the flight may straighten it out before it hits the dartboard, but this adds a variable and it will cause the dart to yaw. To play winning darts, minimize the variables.
I use a modification of the pencil grip. Instead of anchoring the head of the barrel on my middle finger, I use the ring finger. This lets me rest my thumb on the taper where dart shaft and barrel meet, and makes for a consistently repeatable grip perfectly suited to the length of my dart and the size of my hand. I try to have the dart level during the release to minimized fishtailing of the dart in flight.
Fingers and hands obviously come in different sizes, and fortunately, so do darts. To play winning darts, match the dart to your hand, and master a grip that keeps the dart parallel to the ground and in line with the target.

Dart Board Height: 5 feet. 8 inches from floor to the center of the bull's-eye.
Distance from front of the dartboard to the throwing line: 7 feet 9 1/4 inches. To mark the throw line a simple piece of tape will suffice. Major tournaments, however, use a "hockey" which is a thin raised strip of wood approximately 1 1/2 inches high (see image diagram below).
Mounting: Flush to the wall - not leaning like a picture - with the 20 at the top.
Location: Since darts often bounce out of the dartboard, never put a dartboard up near windows or breakables or where anyone could walk between the throwline and the dartboard. Also, if you have a hard floor, such as concrete or wood, you may want to consider getting a dart mat.
The dart scoreboard should be mounted to left or the right of the dart board for easy access.

Each numbered segment has a double ring on the outside perimeter of the scoring area and an interior triple ring (which count as double and triple of that number respectively). The bull's-eye has an outerbull area (also know as the single bull, which scores 25) and an inner bull (also known as a double bull's-eye, which scores 50).

How to throw a dart

Here are tips about to help you hit your target.
Choose a stance that is most comfortable to you. Some people like to face the board, feet together. Rainwater, who is left-handed, prefers to place her left foot forward, toes pointed toward the board. She angles her right foot and right shoulder away from the board so her body is at a diagonal to the board, with the left shoulder forward. So play around with your stance. "With each person, it's whatever feels natural," she said.
Eyes on the prize: Don't stare at the whole dartboard. "Concentrate on the number you want to hit."
It's all in the elbows: "Pretend that your arm is on a shelf," she said. The power in a throw should come from the elbow, so she keeps her arm at a 90-degree angle to the floor. Hold the dart at eye level, gripping its midsection toward the tip, then pull back next to your ear. While looking at your target on the board, extend your arm straight from the elbow and let go of the dart with a flick of the wrist. At the end of the throw, "your index finger should be pointing at what you're aiming at."
Practice is key to perfecting your throw. If you're interested in competing, you have to prepare your arm for the long days. But don't overdo it; your arm will get tired, and that will affect your throw.
Own your darts: Once you get serious, Rainwater suggests buying your own darts. She said prices vary from $20 to $150, depending on the material.

Michael van Gerwen and Adrian Lewis had to overcome some nervy moments before beginning their bids to win the German Darts Masters in Sindelfingen with victories on Friday night.
World number two Van Gerwen, a European Tour winner in Dusseldorf in May, was a 6-4 winner over World Youth Championship finalist Ricky Evans in their first round encounter at the Glaspalast.
"I think I played well early on but the first game in any tournament is always difficult so I'm pleased to win," said van Gerwen. "I had some good moments and I know I can improve, but getting through to Saturday is the most important thing."
Last year's German Darts Masters champion Lewis produced a similar display to van Gerwen before he overcame German qualifier Michael Hurtz 6-3.
In-form world number seven Dave Chisnall had fewer problems as he averaged 100.20 in a 6-0 whitewash of German debutant Dirk Becker, as he began his bid to win a second successive European Tour event following his triumph in Hildesheim a fortnight ago.
Chisnall now meets world number nine Justin Pipe in Saturday's second round, with the Taunton ace coming from 2-0 down to defeat Joe Murnan 6-2.
Australian ace Simon whitlock was a 6-3 winner over Austrian qualifier as he set up a second round meeting with World Youth Champion Michael Smith, who produced a 6-4 comeback win over Colin Osborne.
Wes Newton, who won the most recent European Tour event staged at the Glaspalast over Easter, defeated Dutch youngster Ryan De Vreede 6-3, despite the qualifier hitting two ton-plus finishes, as the Fleetwood ace set up a last 32 clash with Maik Langendorf, the Austrian who held off Arron Monk's comeback from 5-0 down to win their game in a deciding leg.
Five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld defeated emerging talent Josh Payne 6-4 and now plays March's UK Masters runner-up Stuart Kellett, who overcame Alan Tabern 6-3.

A Short History of Darts

The sport of darts began as training in the martial arts, (well, the martial art of archery). Darts began in Medieval England. Historians surmise, because they don't know for certain, that those teaching archery shortened some arrows and had their students throw them at the bottom of an empty wine barrel.
The fact that the bottom of an empty wine barrel was used is a clue to how the game developed into a pastime. It is thought that the soldiers took their shortened arrows with them to the local drinking establishment to both exhibit their skill and have fun at the same time. When the bottoms of wine barrels proved to be inconvenient or in short supply, some inventive dart thrower brought in a cross-section of a moderate sized tree.
The "board" provided rings, and when it dried out, the cracks provided further segmentation. This cracked and dried board began to evolve into what we think of as the current dart board.
A game as fun as darts could not be hidden from the upper classes and they soon put their own stamp on the game. The oft-married Henry VIII was reputed to enjoy the game immensely. So much so, that he was given a beautifully ornate set by Anne Boleyn.
Like much of American History, the roots of darts in America can be traced to the Pilgrims. These hardy colonizers were reputed to have played the game on the Mayflower as it made its ocean crossing. Like the game of horseshoes, it was then played avidly in America whenever leisure time was available.
However, darts remained largely an Anglo-American sport until the Victorian age when it was spread world-wide by the great expansion of the British Empire. It seems that the "sun never set on the British Empire". At the same time, there was never a time when a dart was not in the air. Many native populations were exposed to the game and found enjoyment in it.
