The Zimbabwe Zone VI darts team is expected to meet in Harare ahead of their trip to Blantyre, Malawi, tomorrow. The team is made up of junior players who have come through the National Darts Association of Zimbabwe's development programe. The fourth edition of the Zone VI will be held in Malawi from Wednesday to Saturday and it is the Zimbabwe Under-15 and Under-18 players who will be representing the country.

The NDAZ president Meynard Moyo believes the platform is good for development as it caters for young players.

"The future is what we always look forward to and we will have Under-15 and 18 players representing us," Moyo said.

"Everyone is prepared and ready to go. Most of the players are likely to be some future national team players so such exposure from high profile tournaments is good.

"The team will travel to Malawi tomorrow and as of now we still have the same players who were announced. I am hopeful we will do well in the event," added Moyo.

A warning for students and people living around the University of Illinois campus in Champaign: People are being attacked with blow darts.

The first victim was a 21-year-old U of I student who was shot in the arm with a blow dart near 4th and John Streets, Tuesday night.

An hour and a half later, another man was walking along Springfield Avenue when he was shot in the arm.Both victims say they didn’t see any people or cars around them at the time of the attack.

The University of Illinois sent out an alert to students this morning.

Every Professional Darts Corporation tournament is operated under the rules laid down by the Darts Regulation Authority.

Here you can find details of the most commonly played version - 501 - used in all PDC events on a standard dartboard.

In a game of 501 the object is for one player or a team to be the first to reach zero from starting total of 501.

In simple terms, after three darts are thrown, the throwing player subtracts the total scored from his current total until he reaches zero.

In order to reach zero each player must finish by throwing a double i.e. if player one has 36 remaining he must hit double 18 to win, while if player two has 45 remaining he must hit single 5, double 20 to win - or a another combination of scores provided the final dart scores on a double.

Some versions of the game require a 'double start' whereby players must begin the game with a double as well as 'checking out' on a double. The World Grand Prix uses the 'double in, double out' rule.

Games can be played to a 'Best of' format whereby a player or team winning three legs in a 'Best of Five Leg' competition wins the match.

The World Matchplay and UK Open events are examples of tournament played on a 'Best of' format with legs as the scoring format. Games on the PDC ProTour are held over the Best of 11 Legs.

Other tournaments will be played in 'Set' format, whereby players must win a set by winning the Best of Five legs, before claiming the match in the Best of Five Sets.

The PDC World Championship and World Grand Prix are played using the Set format, with differing lengths of games at each tournament.

In Shanghai, the 2013 International Darts Federation World Cup ended on August 25, the Philippine team a 7-5 final win over the U.S. team, won the most important component of the team title.

Parry, the sole New Zealand representative in the 16-man competition, qualified after winning the New Zealand Charter Clubs title in Upper Hutt last month.

With three Australian qualifiers still to be found, Parry doesn't know which of the top eight players he will meet in the first round."It doesn't really matter which one you get, they are all pretty good," he said.

Parry has previously competed in the white-hot atmosphere which surrounds professional darts in England, lining up against Dutch professional and former world number one Raymond van Barneveld, who has his own vocal supporters known as the Barney Army.


Despite their high profile status, the top professionals were entirely approachable, Parry said.
The 49-year-old leaves for Australia tomorrow and hopes some extra practice will pay dividends.
"I've been practising doubles a bit, putting a bit more training into it."

Invercargill's Dale Frampton will manage New Zealand men's, women's and youth teams to Australia to compete in qualifying tournaments around the Sydney Masters.

The well-known darts administrator will also be working on a pet project of his which involves bringing a PDC tournament to New Zealand.
