Violet tungsten oxide for producing smart heat insulation coating, W18O49, can exhibit similar X-ray diffraction peaks with tungsten trioxide (WO3). Therefore, it is difficult to distinguish W18O49 and WO3 by XRD technology alone. And therefore, other experimental techniques such as selected area diffraction (SAD) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) are needed to determine their chemical structure and phase composition to determine their composition.

So, what is selected area diffraction? Selected area (electron) diffraction, abbreviated as SAD or SAED, is a crystallographic experimental technique that can be performed inside a transmission electron microscope (TEM). And what is high-resolution transmission electron microscopy? High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM or HREM) is an imaging mode of specialized transmission electron microscopes (TEMs) that allows for direct imaging of the atomic structure of the sample. HRTEM is a powerful tool to study properties of materials on the atomic scale, such as semiconductors, metals, nanoparticles and sp2-bonded carbon.
