Tungsten alloy is an alloy material made with tungsten as the base, combined with elements such as nickel, iron, and copper. It combines high density, high strength, high-temperature resistance, and radiation resistance. Thanks to its unique physicochemical properties, this material is widely used and plays a significant role in military, aerospace, medical, industrial manufacturing, and other fields.
In the military sector, the high density and hardness of tungsten alloy make it the "teeth" of modern military equipment. In armor-piercing projectiles, W-Ni-Fe alloys, with adjustable iron-nickel ratios, can enhance tensile strength through heat treatment while retaining good ductility, making them widely used in tank shells and anti-tank missile cores.
In the aerospace industry, center-of-gravity control is a critical factor in determining flight stability. Tungsten alloy’s high density makes it an ideal material for aviation counterweights. In space applications, it is used in components such as satellite gyroscope rotors and rocket engine counterweights.
In the medical field, tungsten alloy’s strong attenuation of X-rays and gamma rays, combined with its lack of lead’s toxic risks, makes it widely used in medical equipment. It is employed to manufacture collimators for CT scanners and shielding covers for X-ray tubes. In nuclear medicine, tungsten alloy serves as a key material for storing radioactive sources.
In mold manufacturing, tungsten alloy’s high hardness and wear resistance make it a preferred material for die-casting molds.
In high-voltage electrical applications, tungsten alloy’s conductivity and resistance to electrical erosion make it a core material for electrical contacts. Additionally, it is used to produce electrodes for electrical discharge machining, where its high melting point ensures shape stability during the process, improving machining precision.
Tungsten alloy’s high density also plays a key role in optimizing the performance of automotive and sports equipment. In racing, tungsten alloy crankshaft counterweights are used to adjust the center of gravity of rotating components, enhancing engine speed. In golf clubs, tungsten alloy counterweights embedded in the bottom of the clubhead lower the center of gravity, stabilizing the ball’s flight path during strikes. In archery, tungsten alloy arrowheads, due to their high density, experience less air resistance in flight, improving accuracy.
