Tungsten, tantalum and rare earth elements has become a key global metal, and from 2015 onwards may be extreme shortages.
Geological Society of South Africa, held in Johannesburg in 2013 annual meeting of the geological forums, Smith said at the meeting, "although the EU and the U.S. Department of Defense and fully agree with the metals are listed in the table key, but they do agree that this is a three 'the importance of the metal on the list of the most forward'. "
The metal is its critical importance to supply metal that is highly dependent on the survival of mankind, and a continuation of the modern lifestyle requires.
Smith pointed out that these minerals are conventionally by a single vendor or state-controlled, usually experienced inadequate investment in new projects, and the performance of a limited nature can replace.
"In addition, the key metals are found in modern portable devices, military or defense applications, applications have continued to grow, it is a number of countries of strategic importance," she commented.
Rare earth is gradually being in one of the most critical metals, and in 2015 began to face potential supply shortages.
So far, outside of China, there are 15 countries from 51 rare earth-related vision. Smith adds that although these projects primary issue is access to capital and separation of rare earth expertise. Around this problem, many countries, including South Africa, is investigating the possibility of establishing centralized separation plant.
