Vials shields manufactured from tungsten alloy provide an excellent solution to reduce the radiation dose to nuclear medical staff, protecting them from potential harm.
For safety reasons, in nuclear medicine, vials of radiopharmaceuticals are held in tungsten shields while the dose is drawn up into a syringe ready for treatment. The tungsten alloy vial shields reduce the finger dose received by medical staff, preventing exposure to harmful levels of radiation. Since tungsten alloy is very dense, some 60% more so than lead, the vial shields can be made more compact, making them easier to handle. In addition Wolfmet is far more durable than lead as it is a harder metal, which resists
surface chips and dents which can harbour bacteria. This resilient surface, in turn, makes it easier to clean and sterilise Wolfmet shields. Wolfmet is non-toxic so requires no painting or coating, eliminating the risk of paint chips which could compromise cleanliness.
There are many benefits of using tungsten alloy for vial shields ,such as High radiation attenuation; good shielding capability,Thinner and often lighter than equivalent lead shields,Easy to sterilise and keep clean,Non-toxic,Easily machined with conventional tools,Hard and durable – no need for steel or plastic coating, ect.
