Yellow Tungsten Oxide Applied for γ-ray Shielding Material

Yellow tungsten oxide is a well-known γ-ray shielding material with the chemical formula of WO3. It has been reported that WO3 can be compounded with natural rubber (NR) to obtain NR-WO3 composite materials. Some experts adopt hydrothermal method to synthesize Bi2WO6 nanoparticles and obtain WO3 and Bi2O3 particles with similar particle size by ball milling. And they fill these particles into natural rubber with a total mass fraction of 30% to prepare NR-Bi2WO6, NR-WO3 and NR-Bi2O3 composite material.

The results show that the tensile strength of the three composites is more than twice that of pure natural rubber. The γ-ray shielding rate of NR-Bi2WO6 composite material reaches 13.6%, which is much higher than 7.4% of NR-WO3 and 9.2% of NR-Bi2O3. Compared with WO3 and Bi2O3, the unique ionic layer-to-layer bonding of Bi2WO6 nanoparticles increases the degree of overlap of extra-nuclear electron clouds that absorb atoms, and the boundary complementarity effect is the key to enhancing the γ-ray shielding performance of composites. In a word, the γ-ray shielding material of yellow tungsten oxide and natural rubber has lower γ-ray shielding rate than NR-Bi2WO6 composite, but higher than NR-Bi2O3.
