The tungsten trioxide (WO3) has a band gap energy of about 2.5 eV and has potential photocatalytic ability in visible light having a wavelength of less than 500 nm. Therefore, WO3 has potential application prospects in the treatment of organic dye contaminated water.
Background
Firstly, China's sewage discharge is large, and the urban sewage treatment rate is low. A large amount of untreated sewage is directly discharged, which becomes a secondary pollution source of the environment, causing most of the rivers and lakes and nearly half of the urban groundwater to suffer different degrees.
Secondly, traditional water treatment methods such as adsorption, coagulation, activated sludge, low efficiency, high cost, secondary pollution, etc., so it is urgent to find an economical and effective way to treat the residual degradation in water Organic Pollutants.
Photocatalytic technology
The emergence of photocatalytic technology and its application in water treatment are expected to make a major breakthrough in wastewater treatment technology in the near future. The use of nano-semiconductor materials (WO3) as a photocatalyst for wastewater treatment has achieved remarkable results.
Why not use titanium dioxide?
There are many reports on the photocatalytic degradation of dyes by anatase titanium dioxide, but there are certain limitations in the use of sunlight to catalyze decolorization of dyes. The band gap of titanium dioxide is 3.2eV, which can only absorb the matching ultraviolet light whose wavelength is shorter than 387nm, and the proportion of ultraviolet light in sunlight is only about 3%, and the utilization efficiency of light energy is low.
