Electrocatalytic Properties of Tungsten Carbide and Montmorillonite Nanocomposites

Tungsten carbide (WC) nuclear electronic configurations with platinum and platinum catalytic performance for similar, can be used as a catalyst for the electrochemical field.
Because of the anti H2S and CO poisoning characteristics such as excellent and has become a hot research topic. However, its electrocatalytic activity is far less than that of platinum and other noble metal catalysts. Therefore, increasing the activity is the key and the technical difficult problem for WC to replace or partly substitute platinum and other noble metal catalysts.
It was found that the combination of tungsten carbide and high conductivity support material can effectively improve the activity of WC. Some scholars choose montmorillonite (MMT) as the carrier of tungsten carbide to prepare tungsten carbide and montmorillonite composite catalytic material, and study its performance, because MMT has 2:1 layered structure, is a kind of natural silicate materials with layered structure, surface electronegativity, large surface area, strong adsorption and cation exchange properties and good dispersion and stability, has a good effect on nano particles, and can maintain the stability of the composite catalyst. Therefore, the catalytic activity of tungsten carbide with platinum like catalyst on the MMT nanosheets can be obtained with good catalytic activity.
WCl6 was dissolved in 50 mL of absolute ethanol, and then E-MMT was added to the above solution and dispersed for 10 min. The system was placed in a water bath at 30 °C for 24 h at room temperature, then allowed to stand still, filtered, washed and dried and the WO3 / MMT precursor was obtained after grinding, the precursor was placed in a quartz boat and placed in a tube furnace, (CH4: H2 volume ratio of 1: 4), and the temperature of the tube furnace was raised to 400 ° C for 30 min, and then increased to 800 ° C for a period of time and then cooled to room temperature under N2 protection to obtain tungsten carbide and montmorillon nanocomposites.
Tungsten carbide and nanometer composite material for electro catalytic acid methanol solution, results show that tungsten carbide and montmorillonite nano composite material has good electrocatalytic activity for methanol in acid solution, and has the catalytic properties of platinum, its electrocatalytic activity is related not only to the phase composition of the composites, but also to the microstructural characteristics of the composites. In the composites, the phases of tungsten carbide are composed of WC and W2C, and WC is the majority, and both in montmorillonite lamellae formed on the outer surface of the uniform load layer, the best electrocatalytic activity for methanol composite material, and the platinum catalytic properties of the strongest, which shows that the montmorillonite layers is a good carrier of tungsten carbide.
