How to Get Insurance for Engagement Rings

Your fiancee's engagement ring is not only a priceless token, it's an expensive purchase.Given the ring's relatively small size and high dollar value, it makes sense to insure it against loss or theft. Replacing an engagement ring out of pocket could be quite a financial blow.

1.Request a quote from your insurance agent. If you already have renter's or homeowner's insurance, it will usually be easy to add a "floater" policy to cover the ring. Make sure to ask what causes of loss are covered.

2.Establish the ring's value. Your sales receipt from the purchase of a new ring may be sufficient. Your insurance company may request a written appraisal of value from a jeweler in addition to the sales receipt. The face value of the policy will be determined by the ring's value.

3.Take the ring to the insurance office. The insurance agent will take photos of the ring, validate your ownership documents, and draw up the policy.

4.Pay the initial premium. Insurance coverage begins upon receipt of your initial premium payment. Make sure to keep up on the premium payments so that your policy doesn't lapse.

Ideas for Making Fashion Jewelry Necklaces

Fashion jewelry is popular, but it can be expensive to buy. And you can't always find pieces in the colors or styles that you like. There are some pieces you can make that won't cost you a lot, and you can design them specifically for your needs.

Lariats

Lariats are long chains of beads and stones that you wrap around your neck however you like. Wrap the chain so there is a choker and a longer necklace with the ends hanging down or make two long necklaces and loosely tie the ends together. You can create multiple looks with this one piece.

Peyote Stitch

The peyote stitch is durable, because you build on previous beads. There are different types of peyote stitches, such as a flat stitch, a round stitch and an uneven peyote stitch, which gives you a lot of options when designing a necklace. Make thick chokers with flowers or shapes designed into the stitch with the beads, or use an uneven peyote stitch to give your piece multiple dimensions and a unique look. The heart choker is a delicate, feminine piece. t is very easy to create and looks great with many outfits. Also, depending on the colors you choose, you can make it really stand out or give it a more elegant look.

Multi-Strand Necklaces

Multi-strand necklaces are fun because you can add as many strands of beads as you like and make a thick, chunky necklace or create a simpler look. Varying the length of the strands works well, too, such as having shorter and longer strands mixed together.

Twisted Rope

You're likely to get many compliments with a twisted-rope necklace because at first glance it looks like a real rope. However, it is made of seed beads and stones. Alternate colored sections with these or add additional stones and glass beads to add flare and originality.

Ladder

A ladder stitch is strong and durable, and you can vary the width of the piece by adding additional rows. These can be made as long necklaces or chokers, or you can add a charm as the centerpiece.

Wedding Necklace Ideas

The preparations that you make to take the walk down the aisle to marry the man of your dreams are the most important that you will ever make. Each detail of your dress, veil, shoes and accessories has been thought out for weeks before that big day. The jewelry that you choose to wear to accessorize your bridal attire must sparkle. Some of the pieces that you choose may have a deep meaning. When searching for the perfect necklace to wear on your trip down the aisle, consider what is most important to you for your jewelry.

Vintage Pieces
A vintage piece of jewelry is the perfect choice for a traditional wedding with a classically designed dress. Antique jewelry may be found in antique shops, at estate sales and on online auction sites. For brides on a budget, vintage necklaces are often affordable. Rhinestones and crystals can create a sparkling necklace with the design and style of a previous era.

Gemstones
A diamond necklace certainly has the sparkle and distinction to enhance your wedding ensemble. You can also choose colored gemstones to add a flash of color to your white dress. Sapphires are a stunning choice for a wedding necklace and they also satisfy your need for something blue. Blue symbolizes loyalty, which makes the sapphire a perfect choice for exchanging vows. For a more classic look, choose pearls; you can continue wearing them on special occasions for years to come.

Family Heirloom
A piece of jewelry from your mother or grandmother is a sentimental choice for your wedding necklace. Consider wearing the necklace your mother wore during her wedding to your father for a piece that has deep meaning. The tradition of passing a wedding necklace from mother to daughter can continue for generations.

Handmade Pieces
With a handmade piece, you can create the exact piece of jewelry you want to wear on your wedding day. Work with a jewelry designer to create a wedding necklace that meets your specifications. If you have a talent for jewelry making, design and make your own jewelry for your wedding.

How to Make Necklaces for a Wedding

Handmade, custom designed necklaces are a great way for a bride to express her personal style on her wedding day. Whether the bride is in need of a beautiful piece of jewelry to adorn her neck or she wants a fun gift for her attendants, handmade necklaces will always be unique. The styles, materials and colors used to create wedding necklaces vary widely, which makes it possible to create necklaces that will fit in well with the theme of any occasion.

1.Determine who will be wearing the necklaces. Options may include the bride, bridesmaids, flower girls or mother of the bride. Talk to the bride about her taste in jewelry to determine if she would prefer glitzy necklaces made with crystals or a more subdued look of simple beads. Ask for a sample of the wedding colors, or the colors of the bridesmaids'dresses, to ensure that the jewelry will match well or better still, take photographs of the garments to refer to.

2.Design necklaces that will work well with the style of dress the bride or bridesmaids will be wearing. For example, y-drop necklaces go nicely with v-neck dresses while strapless dresses may look best with a choker, a pendant or a multi-strand necklace. Choose materials to work with such as real or imitation pearls, sterling silver beads, colored beads and crystal beads.

3.Lay out the beads, or pearls, on a flat surface in the proper order they will be strung on the necklace. Continue to lay out the pattern until you have created a row of beads. If you're making a standard, single-strand necklace, the length of beads or jewels must be approximately 17-inches long.

4.Cut a 24-inch length of beading wire and tie a loose knot in one end to prevent the beads from falling off of the end. Strand the beads onto the wire, one by one, in the pattern that you have previously laid out. Check for consistency once all of the beads are in place and make any necessary changes to the pattern before moving on.

5.Strand a crimp bead and split ring onto one end of the necklace. Run the beading wire around the split ring and slip the wire back through the crimp bead to secure the split ring in place. Repeat the process at the other end of the necklace so there is a split ring on both ends of the strand of beads.

6.Slip the lobster claw clasp onto one of the split rings either with your fingers or by using needle nose pliers. Once the clasp is secure, hold the strand of beads with a pair of pliers between the split ring and the crimp bead. Use your free hand to pull the tail of the wire running through the crimp bead until the beads on the necklace have slid next to the crimp bead so that there is no empty wire between the beads and the clasp.

7.Complete the necklace by placing a pair on crimping pliers around the crimp bead. Compress the pliers firmly to secure the beading wire inside of the crimp bead and cut any excess wire hanging from the crimp bead.

How to Get Rid of Dark Ring from Necklace

While the causes of the discoloration can differ depending on the quality of the jewelry and the specific chemical makeup of a person's body, it is relatively easy to get rid of a dark ring caused by jewelry with products you most likely already have around the house.

1.Choose a cleaning agent that you know your body does not have any adverse reactions to.Depending on the reason for the dark ring left by a particular necklace, some cleaning agents may work better than others. Sometimes inexpensive costume jewelry can leave a dark ring simply because the combination of cheap manufacturing, sweat and cosmetics causes the necklace's coloring to be transferred onto the body; in such a case, choose an agent like vegetable oil or dish soap. Otherwise you may want to use a harsher agent like lemon juice or even nail polish remover.

2.Clean your skin with a regular facial cleanser and water. If the dark ring persists, gently dip a washcloth into the cleaning agent you have chosen. Do not saturate the cloth,as it is better to remove the ring in smaller sections that to douse it with cleaning product and risk irritating the skin. It is possible to mix any of the cleaning agents listed above if one alone does not seem to work. Avoid using skin scrubs or scrubbing excessively hard with a washcloth, as a scrubbing action in conjunction with the cleaning agent may also cause redness and irritation. Lightly dab at the area around the neck where the necklace has left a dark ring.

3.Pat the area dry with a soft hand towel and examine the neck for any remnants of the dark ring. If the ring is still there after you've tried multiple cleaning agents, this may be an indication that you have a skin allergy to the type of metal used in the necklace. The dark ring will eventually fade, but it is best to consult a physician.

4.Apply a light lotion to the area after drying it completely, to ensure that the area affected does not become dry or irritated after the cleansing. Wash the necklace or piece of jewelry in question with jewelry cleaner or tarnish remover.

How to Tell if a Necklace Is Fake Gold

When you buy jewelry and want the real deal, it's good to be able to tell if a necklace is fake gold or the real thing.

1.Gather your gold necklaces you want to identify to see if they are fake gold. Also, get a magnifying glass or a jeweler's loupe to look at each necklace closely.

2.Read the markings on gold jewelry. Necklaces and bracelets made from gold are marked according to purity. Locate the markings to determine if they are gold or fake.

The following marks are used to indicate the percent of gold content of jewelry:

24K: Pure gold
18K: About 75% gold
14K: About 59% gold
10K: About 42% gold

3.In a well lit area, look on your gold necklace near the clasp for a small metal tag. This tag should be oval or rectangle and be the same gold color as the necklace chain and clasp.

Use a magnifying glass or loupe and carefully look at both sides of the tag. It will be marked with the gold's karat marking. The mark can be 10K, 14K, 18K, or 24K or a decimal, such as .750 to indicate 75% or 18K.

4.On the tag, if the marks EP or GP are present, the necklace is plated, which means the

necklace is not solid gold but plated with gold over another metal to reduce cost.

5.If you could not locate a marking, another way to tell if a necklace is fake gold is if the gold tarnishes. Look to see if the necklace has tarnished. If the gold appears dull and silver in color, that means it has tarnished and is fake.

Real gold does not tarnish. Plated gold necklaces can also chip or flake, and they can tarnish with time.

6.A final way to determine if your necklace is fake is to take it to a jeweler. The jeweler can do an acid test to determine the gold content.

Digital Watch vs. Analog Watch

A digital watch works pretty much the same as any other mechanical watch. However, digital watches utilize an electronic power supply to work. Unlike a mechanical watch, digital watches do not tick like a mechanical timepiece. To keep time, it uses an electronic or digital time method to show the numbers. Instead of displaying the time by using a short-hand and a long-hand dial to display the time, the time is visually represented in actual readable numbers according to the actual time.

An analog watch is a timepiece that uses the short hand and long hand within a circular dial just like a traditional, mechanical clock.

How Does a Watch Work?

Watches supply important functions such as the time of day in hours, minutes and sometimes, seconds. They pretty much function as a very small clock. Many watches provide other information that is beyond time functions such as the date, the day of the week, and some even provide times zone information for several countries. The power source of a watch usually comes from a battery or solar light.

The Top Brand-Name Watches for Women

The top brands of women's watches range from low-end department store models that mimic the styles of luxury ladies' timepieces to the ultra-luxury models featuring diamonds and mother-of-pearl accents. Women's watches had received short shrift as a fashion accessory compared to men's watches due to the small size and modest design detail. However, the size of dials in recent years has mushroomed to rival men's timepieces, in some cases creating a more masculine look for women.

Chopard
The Swiss-based Chopard has long been identified principally as a maker of women's watches, producing mostly classic-style dress timepieces. It has recently branched out to produce more masculine-looking chronographs that appear to be smaller versions of men's watches. The Happy Sport line features both sports-style outdoor watches, such as the quartz chronograph, and the dressier 18k rose gold models with moving diamonds on the dial.

Citizen
Citizen remains a top brand for two reasons: its moderate price and its environmentally friendly operation. Prices start at less than $100 and rise to as much as $1,000, depending on the model. The ladies' Palidoro Eco-Drive watch, with its 21-mm case, needs no battery because it's powered by direct sunlight; tiny solar panels embedded under the dial convert light into energy.

Guess
Guess has emerged as a top brand in recent years, thanks largely to its high-end Guess Collection line. Ladies' Guess Collection watches are generally manufactured with stainless steel and use white mother-of-pearl and diamond chips to accent the dial. The watches are usually quartz-powered. Case diameters have grown somewhat compared to previous generations of Guess women's watches, with timepieces now measuring 30 mm to 33 mm.

Tissot
Tissot has stepped up marketing of its women's line of watches with race driver Danica Patrick, the watchmaker's spokeswoman. Along with Patrick's racing image, Tissot has produced the large---at least for the female wrist---PRC100 quartz watch with a 34.8 mm dial. The watch features a glass sapphire crystal, red dial and leather bracelet. Somewhat less eye-catching on a woman's wrist is the trendy 28-mm stainless steel T-Moments model.

Rolex
The ultra-luxury Rolex has been at the top of the list of watch brand names for more than 80 years, and shows no signs of waning. Rolex has eschewed recent trends of producing larger dials on women's watches and instead focuses on workmanship and maintaining conservative styling. The ladies' Rolex Yachtmaster features a modest 29 mm dial, rotating platinum bezel, gray dial and automatic movement. The venerable Datejust ladies' watch features an even smaller white dial, at only 26 mm.
