How to Make Necklaces for a Wedding

Handmade, custom designed necklaces are a great way for a bride to express her personal style on her wedding day. Whether the bride is in need of a beautiful piece of jewelry to adorn her neck or she wants a fun gift for her attendants, handmade necklaces will always be unique. The styles, materials and colors used to create wedding necklaces vary widely,which makes it possible to create necklaces that will fit in well with the theme of any occasion.

1.Determine who will be wearing the necklaces. Options may include the bride, bridesmaids,flower girls or mother of the bride. Talk to the bride about her taste in jewelry to determine if she would prefer glitzy necklaces made with crystals or a more subdued look of simple beads. Ask for a sample of the wedding colors, or the colors of the bridesmaids'dresses, to ensure that the jewelry will match well or better still, take photographs of the garments to refer to.

2.Design necklaces that will work well with the style of dress the bride or bridesmaids will be wearing. For example, y-drop necklaces go nicely with v-neck dresses while strapless dresses may look best with a choker, a pendant or a multi-strand necklace. Choose materials to work with such as real or imitation pearls, sterling silver beads, colored beads and crystal beads.

3.Lay out the beads, or pearls, on a flat surface in the proper order they will be strung on the necklace. Continue to lay out the pattern until you have created a row of beads. If you're making a standard, single-strand necklace, the length of beads or jewels must be approximately 17-inches long.

4.Cut a 24-inch length of beading wire and tie a loose knot in one end to prevent the beads from falling off of the end. Strand the beads onto the wire, one by one, in the pattern that you have previously laid out. Check for consistency once all of the beads are in place and make any necessary changes to the pattern before moving on.

5.Strand a crimp bead and split ring onto one end of the necklace. Run the beading wire around the split ring and slip the wire back through the crimp bead to secure the split ring in place. Repeat the process at the other end of the necklace so there is a split ring on both ends of the strand of beads.

6.Slip the lobster claw clasp onto one of the split rings either with your fingers or by using needle nose pliers. Once the clasp is secure, hold the strand of beads with a pair of pliers between the split ring and the crimp bead. Use your free hand to pull the tail of the wire running through the crimp bead until the beads on the necklace have slid next to the crimp bead so that there is no empty wire between the beads and the clasp.

7.Complete the necklace by placing a pair on crimping pliers around the crimp bead. Compress the pliers firmly to secure the beading wire inside of the crimp bead and cut any excess wire hanging from the crimp bead.
