Ferro Tungsten

Tungsten is the main element for producing special steel, widely applied in refine high speed steel instrument, alloy steel, spring steel, heat-resisting steel, stainless steel and magnetic steel. It is widely used in national defense and people’s daily life, and is becoming an indispensable material.

Tungsten application in ferro steel is in form of ferro tungsten, which is use tungsten concentrate and scrap iron to reduce and smelt in electric-arc furnace. Ferro tungsten mainly contains impurities like Mn, Si, C, P, S, Cu and Sn. 70W and 80W are common seen specifications.

WO3 is easy to be reduced into metal powder by C, Si or Al. Ferro tungsten producing methods are cinder process, obtaining ferro method and perrin process. In the early days, people use carbon as reducing agent to smelt ferro tungsten in electric furnace. Later on, to reduce impurity, they use two furnaces to smelt. However, it costs too much power and is very complex, the produced alloy component is uneven and cause a great loss. Therefore, people use silicon or aluminum to replace carbon as reducing agent, melting alloy and furnace slug by thermal power released by itself, which is called out-furnace method. It doesn’t need outside heating power to reduce cost and very economic efficiency.

Tungsten add into steel will make its crystal gain more finer, promote its hardness, corrosion resistance and impact strength. Tungsten steel main function is high speed cutting steel and mould steel, its advantage is can automatically quench and secondary harden under high drawing temperature (700~800℃). It maintains high hardness and corrosion resistance. Steel containing tungsten is used in making tools such as drilling tip, milling cutter, wire-drawing die, female die, male die, air tool part. Tungsten magnetic steel is permanent magnetic steel of chromium. Tungsten cobalt magnetic steel is hard magnetic material of cobalt. They all have strong magnetic strength and coercive force and are important magnetic material.

Outside furnace method smelting ferro molybdenum, ferro tungsten has easy equipments and simple operation. It can save energy. According to market need situation, arrange production of FeW and MoW flexibly can save a lot of cost and digging producing potential.
