January-April 2025: Baotou Rare Earth Industry Added Value Increased by 12%

According to the Baotou Statistical Bulletin, from January to April 2025, the added value of industrial enterprises above the designated size in Baotou City increased by 13.1% year-on-year, surpassing the national (6.4%) and regional (6.1%) averages by 6.7 and 7 percentage points, respectively, marking 56 consecutive months of double-digit growth.
Industry Performance (January-April 2025):
Mining sector added value increased by 26.5% year-on-year.
Manufacturing sector grew by 10.8%.
Electricity, heat, gas, and water production and supply sectors rose by 11%.
Among 34 major industry categories, 23 recorded growth in added value, representing a growth rate of 67.6%.
Key Sector Growth:
The added value of the crystalline silicon photovoltaic industry, aluminum industry, steel industry, and rare earth industry grew by 9%, 5%, 1.6%, and 12.3% year-on-year, respectively, collectively contributing 4.7 percentage points to the overall industrial added value growth. Additionally, the onshore wind power equipment industry and equipment manufacturing industry saw increases of 37.5% and 23%, respectively.
Product Output (January-April 2025):
Among the 30 key monitored products in Baotou, 14 recorded year-on-year output growth:
Polycrystalline silicon output increased by 81.9%.
Monocrystalline silicon output grew by 59%.
Rare earth compound output rose by 6.2%.
Single rare earth metal output increased by 9.4%.
Ferroalloy output surged by 65.5%.
Aluminum output grew by 7.3%.
Investment Trends:
From January to April 2025, fixed asset investment in Baotou City grew by 21.5% year-on-year, exceeding the national (4%) and regional (18.8%) averages by 17.5 and 2.7 percentage points, respectively, and improving by 0.6 percentage points compared to the first quarter. Driven by Baotou's initiative to build "two rare earth bases," investment in the rare earth industry surged by 230% year-on-year, contributing 5.4 percentage points to overall investment growth.
Baotou’s Rare Earth Significance:
Baotou is a globally renowned hub for rare earth resources. According to the Baotou municipal government, the city’s verified and registered rare earth reserves total 134 million tons, over three times the previously announced 43.5 million tons. Lanthanum and cerium, associated with praseodymium and neodymium, have a distribution ratio of 78% and 20%, with lanthanum-cerium reserves at approximately 100 million tons. The Baotou Daily reports that by the end of 2025, Baotou’s rare earth permanent magnet material production is expected to reach 100,000 tons, with plans to cultivate 15 enterprises with an output value exceeding 1 billion yuan, two enterprises exceeding 5 billion yuan, and one industry-specific champion, firmly advancing the rare earth industry from "world-class reserves" to a "world-class industry."
