Uses of Gold Plating

Expanding Uses
In 1840, George Richards Elkington further developed gold plating for industrial uses. He was awarded a patent and began using the gold plating to make small gold-plated items like snuff boxes and picture frames. The first gold plating manufacturing plant was opened in St. Petersburg in 1844.

Modern Uses
As the electronics industry developed in the mid-20th century, gold plating found additional uses, though in different combinations. Electronic manufacturers focused more on conductivity and corrosion resistance than its decorative qualities. Elkington's original patent has now been modified to more than 300 different U.S. patents and 100 European patents.
