WO3 Applied for Electrochromic Window

WO3 is an important raw material for preparing an electrochromic film - an EC layer film - for assembling an electrochromic window, wherein the prepared tungsten trioxide film is required to have high transparency. In fact, this is also the requirement of experts for the electrochromic smart window - the maximum transparency in the bleached state.

Experts said that before assembling the smart window, the two electrochromic films were respectively decolored using a lithium ion-containing anhydrous liquid electrolyte such as LiClO4 + acetonitrile. After decoloration, the two films are rinsed and dried. But why the decoloring process is needed? The expert explained that if the decoloration process is not used, it is difficult to achieve a better transparent decoloring state after assembly. While NiO is decoloring, Li+ has been injected into the film. Upon coloration, a portion of Li+ will migrate through the electrolyte into the WO3 film. In addition, if Li+ is not injected in advance, Li+ entering the electrochromic film is provided only by the solid electrolyte, which will change the original composition of the electrolyte and the electrical neutrality therein. And this is disadvantageous for stable operation of the electrochromic device.
