Review of China’s Tungsten Ore Market

According to the statistics of China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association, the output of tungsten concentrate was 124,706 tons in 2012, increased by 122,000 tons over 2011 with the growth rate of 2.25%.

In 2011, the revenue growth rate of tungsten ore smelting enterprises was higher than cemented carbide enterprises, and the industry-wide sales revenue exceeded CNY 70 billion with the year-on-year growth of more than 40%.

In 2012, the downstream demand was weak affected by global and domestic economic recession, which had a bad effect on tungsten ore market revenue; and the tungsten industry-wide sales revenue declined by 15.6% over 2011.

China’s Tungsten Ore Reserves Decreased in Past Years

According to the statistics, from 2003 to 2011, China’s tungsten ore reserves decreased from 4.2 million tons to 1.9 million tons with the decline of 54.8%.

Calculated in accordance with the production capacity in 2010, the current reserves only own 23 years of mining life. “China’s Oil, Gas and Solid Mineral Resources Reserves in 2012”.

Which was issued by the Ministry of Land and Resources, note that the newly-added tungsten ore was 841,000 tons in 2012.

The Overview of China’s Tungsten Resources

China’s tungsten resources are widely distributed in 23 provinces (autonomous regions), according to preliminary statistics, there are 382 tungsten ores in China.

Which mainly distribute in Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangdong, Yunnan, Guangxi, Inner Mongolia and Fujian. As for tungsten reserves, China’s tungsten resources mainly distribute in Hunan and Jiangxi.

As far as the types of tungsten ore, China’s main type is white tungsten ore, followed by black tungsten and black-and-white mixed tungsten ore, the proportion is 69%, 22% and 9% respectively.

As for different regions, Jiangxi is mainly based on black tungsten concentrate, Hunan is mainly based on white tungsten concentrate and Henan is mainly based on the byproducts of molybdenum ore.

China’s Tungsten Ore Market Play Important Role in the World

China’s tungsten reserves account for 70% of the total global tungsten reserves; the output and export volume of tungsten ore have been ranked the first all over the world for a long time.

However, the annual total tungsten mining volume is limited, so the tungsten supply is also subject to limitation.

China’s tungsten ore has supplied the world at low price for long time, and 85% of world’s tungsten comes from China.

Report Covers the Future of Tungsten in China

The report, published by ResearchInChina, highlights mineral reserves, supply & demand and development trends of the global tungsten industry, the policy environment, resource reserves, ore type, regional distribution, supply and demand, competition pattern and development trends of the China tungsten industry, the import and export of product breakdown, and the operation, tungsten business and development outlook of nine Chinese industrial players.

China, as the world’s largest tungsten resource country, holds 58.95% of global tungsten reserves and supplies and around 85% of tungsten ore worldwide. In 2012, China newly added 200,000 tons of tungsten reserves and output 131,100 tons of tungsten concentrates, down 3.35% from a year earlier. Exposed to the restrictive policies on control of exploitation amount and export quotas as well as new limited prospecting of resources, etc, the supply and demand in tungsten market is obviously out of balance, and it is expected that Chinas output of tungsten ore will see limited growth in the upcoming several years, and that global tungsten market will be still in tight supply.

The slowdown in downstream demand from machining, electronics, real estate markets in 2012 caused the sluggish development of China tungsten industry, with the consumption of tungsten concentrate decreasing by 15.6% year-on-year and the lingering price slump.

n China, major tungsten producing regions are concentrated in Jiangxi, Hunan, Henan, Guangxi and Fujian, the combined tungsten concentrate of which occupied over 88% of China’s total in 2012. In particular, Jiangxi came out top in terms of tungsten concentrate output, registering 46,500 tons.

In Jiangxi, leading tungsten processing enterprises include Chongyi Zhangyuan Tungsten Co Ltd, Jiangxi Tungsten Industry Group Co Ltd, Jiangxi Rare Earth Metals Tungsten Group Co Ltd, and Jiangxi Xiushui Xianglushan Tungsten Co Ltd, while in Hunan, the counterparts are represented by Hunan Nonferrous Metals Holding Group Co Ltd and Chenzhou Mining Group Co Ltd.

Scrap Tungsten Prices are Likely to Remain High

If  stoping and think deeper, maybe the Chinese are trying to dominate the scrap tungsten market. Carbide tools rely heavily on scrap. If the Chinese take control of that, they will run everything.

Though this theory may thus far be unsupported, it is something to consider given that one of the alleged reasons for reduced tungsten exports from China is that they are consuming more of the metal domestically to produce finished products.

Anetsberger once again points to a less devious motive– the growing industrial needs in China could also explain their desire for scrap.

He agreed, however, with predictions that the current summer lows will rebound, probably around September. After which prices are likely to remain high over the long term, said Anetsberger.

The Chinese are Buying Scrap Tungsten Available

Although suspicions and theories vary, almost everyone in the scrap and recycling tungsten industry point to a common factor at play China.

Stirling attests that the Chinese dictate the tungsten market without a doubt. They have a tendency, for example, to periodically flood the market with cheap APT, making scrap tungsten prices appear high.

Stanbach echoed the sentiment, noting that although the Chinese have mines producing the majority of the world’s supply, they still buy scrap.

Not only is China buying, according to Sery, the Chinese are buying every pound of scrap tungsten available.

Tungsten Projects

Tungsten projects see some action.

APT tungsten prices are holding steady at $400 to $410 per metric ton unit (mtu). And with summer coaxing tungsten traders into relaxation, tungsten exploration, development and mining companies are hard at work on their projects.

One of the fastest-moving brownfields projects for tungsten is Wolf Minerals Hemerdon project in the United Kingdom. The ASX-listed company is working hard at developing the project in order to bring it back online. In June, Wolf reported the first drawdown from the US$82-million funding package by Resource Capital Fund. The company also announced the start of a GBP75 million (~AU$123 million) Engineer Procure Construct contract with GR Engineering Services.

More recently, Wolf engaged CA Blackwell (Contracts) for a mining services contract valued at GBP85 million (AU$140 million).

Blackwell is expected to commence its work contract at Hemerdon sometime in March 2014. Per the contract agreements, investors can expect work to be completed at the project in two parts. Phase one of the contract will include mine stripping and development for which the company anticipates an 11-month timeframe. The second phase of the contract will be undertaking the development of the Hemerdon mine, which should take up to five years to complete once phase one has been finalized.
