Tungsten Carbide Grades

There is no comprehensive comparison of tungsten carbide between and among tungsten carbide suppliers.  A big part of the problem is the huge number of suppliers, grades and trade names.   There are at least 5,000 different grades of mtungsten carbide sold under more than 1,500 different trade names by more than 1,500 different companies.  Refer to our Carbide and Advanced Material Index for more information on Carbide Material.

There is no true standard.  The US "C" designation, The ISO designation and other designations are not necessarily relevant.  Tungsten carbide from two different manufacturers may have identical designation but vary widely in almost every imaginable way including performance.

Different Percentages Of Tungsten Darts

When darts claim to be made of Tungsten, take notice to the percentage of Tungsten that they have in them.

Tungsten darts are not 100% Tungsten but rather a Tungsten/ Nickel alloy. The bigger the percentage of Tungsten, , the denser it will be and generally the more expensive the dart is. An 80% Tungsten dart would have 20% Nickel in it. These darts can range anywhere from 70 to 95%.

Be aware that you may see alot of Tungsten darts for sale at a very cheap price and although they claim to be Tungsten, the percentage of them is actually very small. Anything less than 70% will pretty much lose all of the benefits of Tungsten, so I would stay away from them if you are looking for any kind of durability. When the dart is super dense, like lets say it is a 90% Tungsten, it will also be very hard. Sounds great at first right?

Well keep in mind that if you happen to have a lot of bounce outs (which happens alot with soft tip darts!) or your dart hits the floor often for one reason or another, the higher percent Tungsten will be more likely to break, versus a 80% which would have a bit more "give" to it. It will still be durable and it will wear down slower if it is at least 80%.

The majority of dart players find that the 80% Tungsten darts are a great choice for them in both soft tip and steel tip varieties.

Tungsten Carbide Hardness

Tungsten carbide measures a nine on Moh's hardness scale, meaning it is about as hard as corundum, but not as hard as diamond. In order to polish or finish an item made of tungsten carbide, a diamond must be used because any other metal or mineral would crack and break. Only a diamond is hard enough to be able to scratch tungsten carbide. Its density also surpasses the density of titanium.

What is Better: Steel or Tungsten Darts?(2)

The sport of darts remains an incredibly popular game, very easy to play when out or at home. For the uninitiated, however, there are lots of options when it comes to selecting the right kind of equipment. Darts themselves are made with a variety of materials, weights and tips, each with their own advantages and disadvantages

The cost of your darts may influence your choice. Brass and steel barrels tend to be cheaper, so if you are buying a set for the first time to see whether you enjoy the game, you might wish to try these before committing to the more expensive tungsten darts, which can sometimes be 2-3 times as expensive.

Although the original question asked whether steel darts were better than tungsten, the answer is probably that a combination is best. Professional darts players will typically use tungsten barrels and steel tips.

No matter what the professionals do, however, nothing is more important than how comfortable you are throwing the darts when choosing them. Go to a shop which stocks a variety and they will usually allow you to try them. Experiment with differently weighted darts, different alloys and pick a set which feel right in your hand.
