GS Yuasa Lithium Batteries Power American Probes

GS Yuasa's lithium batteries fitted in the NASA's Radiation Belt Storm Probes in orbit to complete primary and extended mission operations. GS Yuasa Corporation is a Japanese company that makes lead-acid automobile and motorcycle batteries. The company also develops and produces advanced battery technology for various aerospace and defense applications, is actively demonstrating its influence in the field of lithium battery applications.

Foreign media reported that two Radiation Belt Storm Probes launched by the NASA have completed their primary and extended missions after 7 years in orbit, and receive he shutdown command of the executive of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL).

The probes contained a battery consisting of 50Ah/3.7V GS Yuasa lithium batteries to get enough power in orbit. When the mission of the probes is to be extended, APL is set to use the long-life lithium-ion batteries developed by the company to support the detector in normal operation throughout their 7-year life in HEO orbit without changing the battery.

It is understood that the company has provided lithium-ion batteries for more than 190 domestic and international satellite programs supporting missions of communication spacecraft exploration. Its lithium batteries supply ranks first in the industry without any deficiencies or malfunction, indicating that its lithium-ion batteries hold a strong competitive advantage in terms of the life cycle, safety and quality.

In recent years, the company is strengthening its business layout in the new energy field. Besides electric vehicles, the company is exploring other market segments as well, including motorcycles, aerospace, submarines, ships, energy storage, and other fields.

In August of this year, Nagasaki-based Oshima Shipbuilding Co Ltd has built an automatic ship "e-Oshima" with a zero-emission powered only by a battery system. And the large-capacity lithium battery system is produced by GS Yuasa.

In October, the company invested 29 million euros in the construction of its first European battery factory in Miskolc, Hungary. It also completed and developed a silicon metal electrode for the development of solid-state batteries. The energy density of its batteries is twice compared to the existing lithium-ion batteries.

In November, the second Soryu-class diesel-electric attack submarine (SSK) for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) was officially launched. The submarine equipped with a system of lithium batteries produced by GS Yuasa, replacing the traditional lead-acid batteries that were previously used in such submarines.
