Tungsten carbide rod are non-ferrous metals, is also an important strategic metal, tungsten ore was known as "heavy stone" in ancient times. 1781 the Swedish chemist Carl.William found scheelite, and extracted the other new elements acid, 1783 Spanish Depp Air Asia wolframite extracted tungsten carbide acid, the same year, the tungsten powder was gotten for first time and named the element. The tungsten content in the earth's crust is 0.001%. Tungsten carbide rod is mainly Steel gray or silver-white with high hardness, high melting point, and is from the air in the room temperature erosion.
The industrial purpose of tungsten carbide rod is to create the filament and high-speed cutting steel, hard mold, also for optical instruments, chemical instrumentation.

Why would I use Ceriated or Thoriated tungsten instead of Pure?

With the introduction of new power source technologies, the use of pure tungsten is decreasing.
Pure tungsten melts at a lower temperature causing it to easily form a rounded ball at the tip. When the ball grows too large, it interferes with your ability to see the weld puddle and causes the arc to become unstable.
Ceriated tungsten can withstand higher temperatures and works very well with the new squarewave and inverter machines for the following reasons:
Holds a point longer and starts well at low amperages.
Can be used on both AC and DC polarities. When welding aluminum, it has become very acceptable to grind a point on ceriated tungsten (especially when welding on thinner materials).

Tungsten Carbide Indexable Cutting Tools Basic Knowledge

Now, tungsten carbide indexable cutting tools are using chemical vapor deposition method to depositing titanium carbide, titanium nitride, alumina hard layer or composite hard layer. The developping physical vapor deposition method not only can be used for the carbide cutting tools, but also can be used for high speed steel cutting tools, like drill bits, hobbing cutter, screw tap, milling cutter and so on. As a barrier for chemical diffusion and heat conduction, hard coating makes cutter-wear rate slower. Compared with no coating blade, the life of coating blade may improve more than 1-3 times.
Due to the application in high temperature, high pressure, high speed, and corrosive fluid medium parts, it is more and more difficult to machine materials, and the increasing demands for the automatic level of cutting process and machining precision. In order to adapt to this situation, the manufacturer should do something as follows: first of all, the development direction of cutting tools will use the new cutting tool matrials; second, to further develop vapor deposition technologies of cutting tool and higher hardness of the coating on the high strength and high wear resistance base would solve the problem between hardness and strength of cutting tools;third, to further develop the structure of tungsten carbide indexable cutting tools; fourth, to omprove the machining precision and reduce the difference between the product’s quality to make the use of cutting tools realize optimization.

Tungsten Carbide Circular Saw Blades

Tubgsten carbide circular saw blades are sized to fit not only in industrial machinery but also in standard table saws and hand-held circular saws.
The most common tungsten carbide circular saw blades are not solid tungsten carbide; their body is typically tempered steel and only the cutting edges of the teeth are coated with tungsten carbide. A variation of the toothed saw blade is the grinding "wheel" or abrasive blade---still circular but without teeth.
Their edge is coated with tungsten carbide and used to exert abrasive force as they grind through stone, ceramics and metal.

1.Clean
Cleaning both the weld joint area and the filler metal is an important preparation. Remove all oil, grease, dirt, paint, etc. The presence of these contaminants may result in arc instability or contaminated welds.
2.Clamp
Clamping may be required if the work piece cannot be supported during welding.
3.Tack weld
Make short 1/4 in. tack welds along the work pieces to hold them together.

Tungsten carbide has a variety of uses due to its unique physical properties. Its molecular formula is WC, and it is very similar in nature to titanium carbide. Since it does contain two different elements, it is classified as a chemical compound.
Melting Point
Tungsten carbide has an extremely high melting point at 5,200 degrees Fahrenheit.
Hardness
Tungsten Carbide falls between 8.5 to 9.0 on Moh's hardness scale, making it almost as hard as diamond.
Military Uses
The military makes armor piercing ammunition out of tungsten carbide.
Sports Uses
Ski poles sometimes use tungsten carbide to reduce the impact on the skier's legs.
Everyday Uses
Many jewelers use tungsten carbide to create wedding bands for men.

How to Sharpen Carbide Drill Bits

1. Put on safety goggles and canvas gloves. The goggles protect your eyes from sparks and debris.
2. Turn on your grinding wheel. Hold the side of the drill bit next to the broad side of the wheel, so the bit is parallel to it.
3. Holding the bottom of the bit, press the side of the bit lightly against the side of the spinning wheel.
4. Turn the bit clockwise while moving it downward on the wheel. Make sure the surface of the wheel is coming in contact with the cutting ridge of the blade.
After you have sharpened the ridges of the bit, touch any angles at the tip to the wheel to smooth them out and sharpen the edges. Take care to press only the flat side of each angle to the wheel, and not the point.

How to Use Carbide Drill Bits
- Details
- Category: Tungsten Information
- Published on Thursday, 09 May 2013 15:29
- Hits: 2288
1. Choose the type of carbide drill bit that is needed for the project or application. Carbide drill bits come in many varieties, such as a standard twist bit or a hole saw.
2. Open the drill chuck by turning it counter-clockwise. The chuck is the hard rubber end at the tip of the drill.
3. Insert the drill bit into the chuck.
4. Tighten the chuck by turning it clockwise. Once the chuck has been hand-tightened, hold on to the chuck with one hand and then press the trigger once to activate the drill. This will ensure that the chuck is tightened properly to secure the drill bit.
5. Place the drill with the carbide drill bit against the surface that you need to drill. Hold the drill at a 90 degree angle or perpendicular to the work surface.
6. Press the trigger on the drill and lightly apply pressure to allow the bit to dig into the material.
7. Spray water on the drill to dissipate the heat that is created from the drill bit drilling through the metal or stone.

Titanium Vs Tungsten Carbide
- Details
- Category: Tungsten Information
- Published on Thursday, 09 May 2013 15:08
- Hits: 2344
Hardness
While both materials are much harder than other metals, such as gold and silver, tungsten carbide is harder than titanium and is much harder to engrave.
Ductile
Titanium is more ductile than tungsten carbide. Titanium will bend under high pressure while tungsten carbide will shatter under high pressure.
Weight
Tungsten carbide is much heavier than titanium. Tungsten carbide weighs over 90 percent more than stainless steel while titanium is 43 percent lighter than stainless steel.
Price
Titanium is typically cheaper than tungsten carbide because tungsten carbide has higher production costs. Tungsten is formed in conditions where temperatures exceed 6,000 degrees F.
Applications
Titanium has applications in the aircraft and aircraft missile production industries because it is a very strong but light material. Tungsten carbide is used in many applications, including grinding, machining and polishing.
