Tungsten Oxide Applied for Smart Glass

Tungsten oxide, as an electrochromic material, is an important raw material for the preparation of a smart glass. Wherein, the tungsten oxide nano powder can function alone or together with other electrochromic materials to form a composite electrochromic material. According to reports, the research team at the University of Texas at Austin used a nanocomposite material, a combination of amorphous niobium oxide and tungsten oxide nanocrystals to create a new smart glass.

The base of the glass is made of amorphous niobium oxide, in which a tungsten oxide nanocrystal mesh structure is embedded. Although both are electrochromic materials, the spectrum absorbed during discoloration is different. The tungsten oxide nanocrystal is for near-infrared rays, and the niobium oxide is for visible light. When not charging, the two smart materials are transparent, passing through visible light and near infrared. Once the voltage is applied, the tungsten oxide nanocrystal will be charged first to change the transmittance, thus shielding the near infrared rays, but the visible light is still permeable, which is called the heat insulation mode. In this mode, the smart glass can shield 90% of the near infrared rays. If you continue to charge, the niobium oxide substrate will also change the transmittance, together with visible light, which can shield 80% of visible light, called the shading mode.
