Practice Guidelines for Tungsten Darts Ⅰ

Practice makes perfect. That is as true for tungsten darts as it is for any other sport. If you want to play consistent and competitive tungsten darts you need to practice as often as possible. Some people recommend shooting at least one hour per day. However the amount of time you practice is irrelevant. How you go about practicing and sticking to a schedule are the two most important aspects of practicing. Here are a few pointers to consider.

Take it seriously. A practice session is not time spent throwing a few tungsten darts with friends, tungsten dart practice is serious business. You should approach practicing just like you would a match. Make sure to stay focused and work on a specific goal for each session. This is where the amount of time you spend practicing becomes irrelevant. If you set specific goals for each practice session then once you achieve those goals you can stop practicing. It isn’t about quantity, but rather quality of practicing.

Simulate a high-pressure environment. One of the best things you can do when practicing is to try to simulate the high-pressure situation of a real match. You can do this by shooting with someone who is also serious about practicing. You can also create pressure situations by using the clock. For example, give yourself 10 minutes to shoot as many double 20s as possible. Keep track of your high number and try to beat it. You can also replay an old match you lost, trying to change the outcome by shooting differently.

Warfare Tungsten Dart Rule

Warfare tungsten dart rule is a simple game of elimination that may be made as easy or as difficult as you wish by simply adjusting the playable area of each number used. Because the entire board is used, it is very good practice. It may be played by two players or teams.

The Object: To be the first player to eliminate your opponents soldiers.

The Scoring: The score board is divided into two columns with the player or team names written at the top of each column.
Each player (or one player from each team) throws one tungsten dart at bulls-eye, closest to the bulls-eye goes first and chooses whether to be the "top" army or the "bottom" army.

The numbers 11, 14, 9, 12, 5, 20, 1, 18, 4 and 13 are written in the column of the "top" army. The numbers 6, 10, 15, 2, 17, 3, 19, 7, 16, 8 are written in the column of the "bottom" army.

The Play: Each player takes a turn trying to "kill" each "soldier" in the opponents "army". A soldier is killed by hitting the area of the board where he is located. Each time a soldier is killed, that number is crossed off the scoreboard. When all the soldiers in one army have been eliminated, that army has lost the game.

In order to make the game more difficult, you may designate valid areas that need to be hit. For example, only the thin outer "doubles" ring may be used. You can also handicap a weaker shooter this way: the stronger shooter has to hit the doubles ring while the weaker shooter only has to hit anywhere in the number.

By the way, if you shoot your own soldier, he dies. So be careful on the "border" areas.

Strategy: This game is not properly named. Warfare evolve a lot of strategy, however, this game does not.

How to Aiming Tungsten Darts

Many people either aim naturally and don’t think about it or don’t actively aim at all. Either way, you should pay attention to aiming. By truly concentrating on the board you can feel your focus being drawn into the diagonal lines. Then try to imagine your target area is bigger than it really is. Experiment with the following aiming options and make sure to practice. The key to consistent aiming is practicing until it becomes second nature.

Here are few things you should know about how to aiming your tungsten darts:

Find a sight line. Some people use a sight line on their throwing hand to help them aim. For example, you could use the first or second knuckle on the thumb of your throwing hand. Some people use the tip of the tungsten dart. Others use the small finger of the throwing hand to line up properly. The ultimate goal with a sight line is to line up your shot consistently.

Lead with your elbow. Just like some pitchers in baseball lead their pitch with the elbow, you can lead your tungsten dart throw with your elbow. You start by being aware of where your elbow is pointing. Make sure your elbow is pointing slightly up and directly at the dartboard. When you start your throw your elbow leads the process followed by the basic mechanics of your throw.

Aim directly at your target. Some people try to aim to the left or right of the real target. This is just lazy tungsten darts and can lead to technical and mental problems the longer you throw. If you are aiming at triple 20 and you miss to the left then aim directly in the middle of the triple 20 again. Don’t try to aim to the right to overcompensate for the last throw.

Know your dominant eye. Everyone has a dominate eye and it’s important to make sure you lead your aiming with that eye. If you don’t know which of your eyes is dominant take turns throwing three tungsten darts with each eye closed. Which ever eye you have to struggle to keep closed while you throw your tungsten darts is your dominate eye. Make sure you lead with this eye and you will naturally gain confidence as your throw.

Wheelchair Dartboard Set-up

In 2010 Russ Strobel submitted to the Darts Australia a new recommended wheelchair dartboard set-up. The height Russ has come up with is 137cm to the centre Bull. The height was based on the perceived origins of the standard hanging height of the standard clock dartboard. It is said the average height of a man in the England UK was 5’8” around 1920’s, the height to the centre bulls-eye of a standard board. Modern adjustments make that 173cm. Russ has taken this analogy and worked out what the height would be should a man of 5’8” (173cm) be sitting in a wheelchair. His exact figure came out to be 136.5cm however as Russ explains the addition of 0.5cm would make the recommended wheelchair dartboard height easy to remember 137cm (wheelchair) - 173cm (Standard).

This new height for wheelchair users was recognized by the WDF on October 8th 2012. The fisrt World Disability Winmau' Masters took place in 2014.

Advanced Tungsten Darts Throwing Techniques

No matter what style of throw you use, always remember that it should be a consistent and comfortable throwing motion. The more consistent your mechanics the better you will throw. Experiment with different throwing motions to develop your style and then pick one style and practice until the motion becomes second nature. Your throw is one of the most important elements of the tungsten dart game. Take some time to analyze your throw and develop some good habits.

Advanced tungsten darts throwing techniques should incorporate the following:

Minimize movement. Only the shooting arm moves. Your shoulder should stay completely still, as should the rest of your body. You’ll make the game easier by keeping as still as possible while throwing. A steady and controlled back swing is critical to accuracy. Very few people can throw accurately without a back swing. And one smooth and fluid motion to the board is critical. Try to minimize any side-to-side motion.

Consistent release. This is very difficult to monitor, however a reliable release point for your tungsten dart throw is crucial to achieving consistency. Some players release the tungsten dart early in the throw, when the arm has just begun the forward motion. Others wait longer and release the tungsten dart at the very end of the throwing motion. Find out what is most comfortable for you and practice consistency with the release point.

Snapping the wrist. Not all players snap their wrist at the end of the throw because it is one more thing that can go wrong in the throw. However, it does help with acceleration in the last phase of your throw. A slower, controlled throw can increase accuracy and snapping your wrist like a whip can provide sufficient speed at the end of the throw.

Follow-through. A follow-through is critical. When a great basketball player takes a shot his hand follows through the motion of shooting the ball. Tungsten darts requires the same motion. At the end of your throw your fingers should be pointing at your target or down towards the floor. If you are pointing up to the sky then you probably aren't following through properly.
