Wedding Ring Engraving Explained

The process of engraving a wedding band is not a new thing. Most couples are fully aware that tungsten wedding bands, like any other metal, can be engraved. However, many couples do not seem to realize exactly where their wedding band may be engraved, let alone what can be engraved on that wedding band. Surprisingly to most couples, is that they will discover that there is a multitude of ways in which to engrave a ring.

There are two types of engraving methods, really. The more classic form of engraving is called traditional or etched engraving. Traditional or etched engraving is accomplished through the simplest form imaginable, the “old-fashioned” way: carving the engraving onto the surface of the ring. What this means is that your engraving is scratched onto the surface of the ring, much like a person would carve a sign or a symbol on a piece of wood. How this typically works is that a harder substance must be used to “scratch” (etch or carve) into the softer substance.

We know what must be streaming through your mind, “but I thought tungsten is scratch resistant and one of the hardest substances on the planet. How can I get my tungsten rings engraved?” While this is extremely true, it is important to note that tungsten carbide, while extremely hard is not the hardest substance on earth. The title of hardest substance on earth is reserved for diamonds. While also a girl’s best friend, diamonds are also the best friend of an engraver wishing to engrave anything onto a substance as hard as tungsten.

The other form of engraving, which is more modern, is known as laser engraving. Laser engraving is typically used for harder metals, such as tungsten carbide. Laser engravers basically burn the engraving onto the surface of the ring. This is done, electronically, through the use of software and a computer.

Whichever route you wish to go, an engraving can personalize a piece of jewelry even more than by simply choosing the piece of jewelry to fit your desires and styles. Laser and traditional forms of engraving will get the job done, it is more a matter of what it is that you want engraved.
