Watch Band Repair Tips

A good watch is not just a purchase, it is an investment. A good watch should not only last a lifetime, but it should last beyond you, so that you can pass it down with pride. Although a well-made watch will last for a long time with regular maintenance, sometimes you cannot avoid a broken watch band. A watch band is fairly easy to fix with the right knowledge and tools.

Tools
Before repairing your watch band, make sure you have the right tools. It does not help the repair by using tools not suitable for the job. To repair a watch band, you will need a ban pin pusher plier set, a bracelet pin remover base, a pin punch set, a watchmaker's hammer and screwdriver set, and possibly a knife. Sometimes you need only a screwdriver and a watchmaker's knife, but the tools listed are the bare minimum for professional watch band repair. All these materials can be bought from watch repair shops, craft stores and on the Internet.

Leather Bands
If your leather band has snapped, or is worn, you may wish to replace it. Some leather watches come with a pin called "Easy Fit". These pins do not require any tools to replace the band. These bands are convenient, but you can only buy a band that has a pin that fits your watch; you cannot replace the pin with a smaller or larger size. When replacing a leather band, it is better to buy a band that is a little bit tight, as opposed to being loose. Leather bands relax over time and will fit better with some use. You can determine the size of the strap by finding the manufacturer's number on it, and referencing that against a millimeter measurement between the lugs to get the pin size.

Metal Bands
Check to see if your metal watch band can be removed from your watch. Some manufacturers bond the metal band to the watch itself, and can only be replaced with materials from the manufacturer. Some metal bands have pins that hold the links together, while others have screws. If the metal band has a screw type, be incredibly careful as replacing these screws if lost or damaged can be difficult. When removing a screw from a metal band, make sure you are using the correct size screwdriver. Using too large or too small a screwdriver can damage the head of the screw, making it impossible to remove from the band. If the band is held together by pins, you can use a pin removal tool to push out the pins and put them back in. This tool is great to use if you are resizing a band.
