Halogen Headlamps

Our car headlights are usually halogen headlamps, and they're incandescent, but they're brighter and live longer than regular incandescent lamps.

Halogen lamps are also a type of incandescent lamp that uses halogen gas such as iodine or bromine in the bulb. At high temperatures, sublimation tungsten filament and halogen have chemical action, after cooling down tungsten will be re solidified in the tungsten wire, forming a balanced cycle, avoiding tungsten filament become premature fracture, so halogen bulb lives longer than incandescent lamp.

Halogen bulbs operation principle is: When the filament heats, tungsten atoms are evaporated and move to the glass tube wall, when it close to the glass wall, tungsten vapor is cool down to about 800°C and combine with halogen atoms, forming a tungsten halide (tungsten iodide or bromide tungsten). Tungsten halide keeps moving to glass tube center and moving back to the oxidated filament,  the tungsten halide is a very unstable compound, it will re-decomposed into tungsten and halogen vapour after heat, so tungsten deposits in bulb filament, making up the evaporated part. Through the recycling process, the service life of the filament has been greatly extended (almost 4 times of incandescent lamp), at the same time because the filament can work at higher temperatures, resulting in higher brightness, higher temperature and higher luminous efficiency.

What most people are familiar with is the automobile halogen lamp. With soft light halogen lamp in cars, it is more energy saving, lives long life, easy to repair. It still plays an important role in traffic.
